Wellman
Props for it being solid. Despite watching the original movie and even the cartoon as a kid, I ain't in a hurry to see this myself. Quote Link to comment
OPTIMUS124
I mentioned this in the GD thread about Transformers: One This may be a contender for the best TF movie ever made (yes, this includes the 1986 film). While it is a kids film, it's definitely in the Pixar-esque type of tone. It's very clear that they know the audience spans 5 to 50 year olds. Animation - Transformers One is a joy to look at. I personally felt the "simple" designs were offputting, but there is a reason for it. Having said that, the quality of the animation, the textures, the different sheens between types of metal work together insanely well. I believe this is ILM's first animated feature and I could see this getting an Oscar nod. The characters do a significant amount of emoting with their eyes. One scene with a faceoff got a man-tear out of me—not because of what was said, but because of what wasn't. For the characters, I'll be using their "original names" here. Orion Pax—Hemsworth does a great job capturing the hopeful Cybertronian without bastardizing Cullen's diction. I was initially 100% against this choice. Having seen it, if they bring him back for future movies, I'm here for it. He's proven to have comedic timing across multiple media and has the chops to do voicework. D-16—Bryan Tyree Henry is the standout here. This is how you handle a character's tragic fall if you must do it in less than two hours. Henry captures all of D-16's pathos in the delivery, and it escalates reasonably throughout the film. Framed differently, you could see it as a hero's journey, especially with one scene in particular. The way the "logo" comes up is masterfully done. Elita—ScarJo does the tough character well here. I was somewhat surprised at the direction they took her, but welcomed it. B-127—Keegan Micheal Key sounds more like a teenager than most teenagers. He's got most of the humor in the film. There's one scene later in the film with certain enhancements that had the crowd dying. Story—I wasn't surprised by anything. Early in the film, it was pretty clear what the overall angle was. The journey of getting there is more of what it's about. There are elements in the OG lore that are kept, yet at the same time they do quite a few new things. I really hope that this continues on Cybertron and "ends" going to Earth. Score—Brian Tyler uses elements from all of Transformers lore (e.g., G1, Prime, Bayverse, Knight/CapleVerse, etc.) to create themes. It all works. I only have two real "cons". The action occasionally cuts too close to the characters and the movie slows down when the quest starts (although it immediately picks back up). Easter Eggs—Of course, they are all throughout this movie and done with subtlety with the exception of one iconic pose. It made me cringe because it lingered a little too long. As a fan of the franchise, you can tell there was love put into this project. Transformers: One is what we have been looking for; a movie focused on characters we want to love with a heartfelt story. What brought me joy more than anything is that some children will see this movie, and it'll be their G1, the gateway into the larger mythos spanning 40+ years . . . and it's actually good. I honestly hope this project does well and they continue to make more of these with the same level of care. If you can see this movie when it is released, I highly recommend it. Orochizoolander
Joker 2 was pretty bad even without the songs. Some nice visuals though, there's a decent movie somewhere in there too, but as is and with the random forced songs oof 4/10 it was even worse than Challengers. A lot of just okay at best films this year like Blink Twice or Speak No Evil. Civil War was amazing, glad they only hinted at the reason for the war and focused on the experience of war itself. Love Lies Bleeding was good, you got lesbian romance and Ed Harris as a villain can't go wrong. Monkey Man was decent, good have used better editing and pacing, but the movie was littered with countless issues including running out of funds so some of it shot on iphone lol. Saw a lot of other movies in 2024, but forgot or too lazy to mention them now. Late Night With the Devil and Dune part 2 are both tied for film of the year, absolute must watches in their genres. MillionX
Ok, this guy echoes my sentiments exactly on the new Salem's Lot... overall I really enjoyed it....and I definitely must get that on physical media asap if it ever gets a 4k or blu-ray release. Stephen King is credited as an executive producer on it, so yeah they apparently had his guidance on it as well. DangerousJ 1 Quote Link to comment
