You guys got any good recommendations for steam store pick ups?

Almost done with The Mesenger. Still have a couple of other Super Giant games to get to (Transistor and Pyre). Roguelikes, metroidvanias and stuff that can run on an old PC welcomed.

Not really sure how old your computer is or what it can run but here are some suggestions -

It took 6 batteries. For whatever reason, it has to be Duracells. Even Energizers would wouldn't work half the time.

I had a Game Gear and saved up whatever money I had to get rechargeable batteries. The charger was mad expensive and so were the batteries and on top of that. They took long to charge as well. Also shit quality since the tech wasn't really there yet. I'm pretty sure they got worn out over time. The worst part was that the charger could only charge four batteries at a time so I always had two batteries just waiting on standby. So in the end, it took probably like 6 hours of charging for 2 hours of gameplay. When I found out I could use the Genesis AC adapter, I was thrilled, mad, confused, sad, and eventually had to accept all the time and money I wasted trying to play video games on a Game Gear with batteries.

(and yes, they were energizers lol)

I'm assuming you've got Hades already based on that statement. That game is like crack. Other recommendations (check requirements more closely before buying any of these):

Bloodstained- RotN is metroid style, both CotM games are classic Castlevania style. All 3 are great, CotM2 is my favorite of the bunch. You might have trouble running RotN, the CotM games could run on a potato.

Strider (2014)- Metroid style, classic fast Strider feel

Guacamelee (both of them)- metroid style with great combat

Dead Cells- rougelike/MV-ish

Axiom Verge- Metroid style

Blaster Master Zero (all 3)- Kind of metroid style, at least in the overworld. Great stuff.

Fight n' Rage- best brawler ever, IMO. Lots of combat depth, tons to do, well balanced modern retro brawler.

Blazing Chrome- Contra style, kind of like Hard Corps but less sadistic

Crimzon Clover- my favorite shmup- it's $2.49, worth giving a shot even if you haven't played the genre much.

Hyper Light Drifter- Cross Zelda with the PS2 Shinobi- tough but really fun

Salt and Sanctuary- 2d Dark Souls

Furi- challenging boss rush game with great combat, a unique art direction and a killer soundtrack. Requirements are pretty low, if you're running older integrated graphics I don't know if you'd be able to run it.

Hollow Knight- tough Metroid style game, one of the best in the genre

Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom

Ori and the Blind Forest

Ori and the Will of Wisps

N++

Castle in the Darkness

Batbarian Testament of Primordials

Celeste

Cursed Castilla

Guacamelee 1+2

Hollow Knight

Hades

La Mulana

This list ranges from pretty good to a couple of games I consider near masterpieces (N++, Hollow Night).  N++ is probably the most fun I have ever had with a 15 dollar game and it's even more of a steal when you consider how long it takes to complete the game.  I finished it on PS4 and am about halfway through it on PC.

Some recommendations that haven't been covered already.

Huntdown - A shoot em up in the vein of Contra and Metal Slug. Tons of throwbacks to the side scrolling games of old.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/598550/HUNTDOWN/

Katana Zero - Action game that's the melee equivalent to Hotline Miami. If you like having to plan a route in order to complete stages then you'll have fun with this.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/460950/Katana_ZERO/

Steel Assault - 16 bit action platformer

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1280300/Steel_Assault/

Cyber Shadow - Action platformer by the developers of Shovel Knight. The game is essentially a modern take on 8 bit Ninja Gaiden

https://store.steampowered.com/app/861250/Cyber_Shadow/

Them and Us - Survival Horror game in the vein of classic Resident Evil. Without knowing the specs of your PC there's no telling how it will run. Luckily it does have a demo so you can try it out

https://store.steampowered.com/app/915600/Them_and_Us/

30XX - It's roguelike Mega Man. It's an early access game so keep that in mind.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1029210/30XX/

Marlow Briggs - A hilarious character action game. It revels in the b-movie level stupidity.

A new Strider would be so cool; I'd buy immediately (2d preferrably)... it's been a long time since that last one.

Dead Cells---so looking around, I see that the "Everyone" update hasn't hit consoles yet apparently but it should be "soon".

One thing for any newcomers, btw---the upper end of Dead Cells difficulty is fair but still pretty ridiculous.  The vast majority of people who play this game will never even get CLOSE to the top difficulty and the true final boss.  The strange, interesting thing is that it's not even what I'd call "bullshit" shenanigans difficulty.

..like a lot of games in this category, things get a lot more fun and interesting when you have certain permanent upgrades (runes) unlocked---the ability to stomp thru certain floors and the wall-climbing at the very least.

Thanks for all the suggestion, decided to cut it to about 4 games and keep purchases at less than 30 so I got...

Steel Assault

Fight n' Rage

Crimzon Clover

N++

Snagged Steel Assault. Katana Zero I couldn't get into. Too much story nonsense in between gameplay segments. Every time I wanted the action to keep going, I'd have to go through a bunch of dialogue. Its kind of a cool premise but bleh.

I'll find a away to rewatch Record of Lodoss war and then try and jump into that one later on.

Loop Hero

I've seen people play it and it made zero sense to me. Not that It isn't good or that I wouldn't enjoy, I'll probably stick to more actiony stuff right now and then dive into something more brainy later.

If Nintendo was smart, they'd open it up to the community and let them do the work for them, paying the dev/team that came up with the best solution. I don't understand why big companies will let inferior stuff rock when they have folks out in the communities that can come up with better solutions.

There's a mobile Tetris game I've been playing, but as expected,  the controls are awful, while there are a few really fantastic  clones available  that have so many great features  (including great controls)  The Tetris Company  would be wise to either copy or just buy out the dev outright.

Nintendo don't care about putting a good product any more, what they really want is your money. And they will milk nostalgia while putting the minimum amount of effort possible. Hence why the games are part of a subscription service and not a buy want you want model the VC was on the Wii.
And best of all, they got a army of Fans that would happy stand up to defend Nintendo's shitty practices.

If Nintendo was Smart they would of hired the team behind AM2R instead of litigating them to death.
It's what Sega did and how we got Sonic Mania.

They also would not have shit netcode and shit servers for all their Online games

Sad thing is The Tetris Company is just a rights holder and licensee of the Tetris Brand, and have never written their own games.
Also there enough indie and home brew clones of Tetris that The Tetris Company can't even take legal action as long as people don't call their game Tetris.

The Tetris Company is 50% owned by Tetris Holding, LLC and 50% Blue Planet Software, both bought the rights from the State Owned Elektronorgtechnica (ELORG) which was a former Soviet agency under the USSR  Ministry of Foreign Trade.

I am glad that Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov (who owns Tetris Holding, LLC ) can finally profit from his creation.

I'm ok with them just licensing. Tetris is a pretty simple game on its face and I've enjoyed seeing the various treatments its gotten over the years, whereas if they were the ones making all the games, I think there would be a sameness to them.

But like you, I'm glad Alexei was finally able to make money from the game (he didn't profit at all from it until well into the 90s!) because he deserves it and because  he seems like a legitimately  nice guy even after he made one of the best selling games of all time.

I could tell he had juggle potential but damn man. His opponents were racking up frequent flyer miles.

I do wonder if his gameplay (and look) is indicative of what to expect from SFVI

It would be interesting to see with what mechanics they will replace the V systems, if they will move some of the VSkills to specials, and if the moves that they have locked behind Vtriggers would be moved to regular specials, EX or supers.

Man, Curse of the Moon 2 does not fuck around, I am getting slapped compared to the first.

It's much tougher than the first, especially in a few of the later "episodes". Then there's boss rush mode, which is brutal, solo mode (any character solo for a run), and legendary modes (I haven't messed with Legendary- solo runs on normal/veteran were tough enough for me the last time I dug in deep). The first one being too breezy was really its only downside, this one certainly makes up for that. But it's also balanced so that solo runs are possible if you're good enough and are willing to put in the work. And there's casual mode for people not interested in the challenge. Definitely one of my favorite games, anyone remotely interested in classic CV should play it.

Well, VtM Swansong got delayed

https://twitter.com/VampireSwansong/status/1465380042662416391/photo/1

now it's for May 2022.

oh yeah, while I'm here... this was the last trailer that came out for it recently...showing off the Toreador-clan character

Cliff Notes for those types real quick--- the vamps of clan Toreador are basically your "Lestat/Interview with the Vampire" types (*inspired by the Anne Rice types in the books and movies)...and their whole thing is in being obsessive with anything they find to be "beautiful".  Power-wise, they have the superhuman speed (celerity) and a natural affinity for "Presence", which is a supernatural way of being irresistible and influential.

ohhh hopefully it's basically the same thing just in the Marvel universe instead.  I enjoyed the concept of what DCUO is; the player makes their own original character with an established hero or villain as a mentor....no need to re-invent the wheel there; that concept is already a perfect superhero/villain game in an established universe like Marvel or DC, imo.  heh, I forgot who my characters' mentors were... Circe was one...and on the hero side I think I had Superman as another character's mentor, though he was really more of a speedster; not necessarily a Kal El clone.

...well, I would prefer a normal game though, instead of a MMO.  That genre itself is always a bit of a tough sell to me, since I would prefer all things to be offline-playable, with the option of a solo experience. (*and that is some sad shit, imo....the fact that "offline capability" has become like an unexpected "bonus feature" these days.)

ALERT: Dead Cells! --getting back into the game; it updated finally on console!  The "Everyone is Here" update is live now....

sheeeitttt, that run on Dead Cells just now... there was a moment where I had the closest of close calls in all my time playing this game... I had a curse, with the alienation mutation, so I had to kill more than the normal amount of enemies to clear the curse.... anyway, while jumping around, one of the "Inquisitor" enemies happened to fire his projectile attack at the right time to *almost* get me...on the way down from a jump, I was basically right on that projectile, but I had that "lightspeed dash" and hit the dash at the last possible moment... this had to have been the very last frame of animation before I was going to take damage, because it looked like I should've been hit, but I dashed away, fully safe.  For those who are unfamiliar, when you are cursed, any 1 hit will kill you, regardless of what your health is looking like.

Lightspeed Dash is one of my favorite powers... whenever I'm playing "custom" to set what abilities and items will spawn, it's one of my usual picks.... like in most games, I like to have superior mobility and speed... that tends to be the top tier shit in just about any situation, in most games....besides, it just looks cool; like if the character actually has DC speedforce for a moment...you move in a blurred streak across the screen, and it damages enemies (+ other effects depending on what affixes rolled with your lightspeed dash when you got it).  The other "super fast cool shit" is the Phaser teleport; that's another regular pick for me.

I think my second Switch fan died. I got the overheat message while playing Animal Crossing before work yesterday and it went into sleep mode. It dawned on me that I couldn't hear the fan the way I used to and that my Switch felt hotter than usual. Thankfully, I've got the tools to take the screws off my Switch as well as an extra fan from when this happened last year. Still, my Switch is a 2017 model and this will be the second time I've had this work done. Makes me wanna pull the trigger on an OLED model.
