We really trying to thread this impossible needle? Akuma's repeatedly described as 'blood soaked' for a history and he himself talks about all those that have "fallen before his fist". "Countless" warriors have met their fate against Akuma. Let's stop pretending that he's not evil as hell. Yes we only know of a few battles he's been in but by that logic Ryu has only fought a handful of times instead of the HUNDREDS of battles he's canonically supposed to have had. Akuma's bloody history is not implied. It is not hinted at. It is explicitly stated many times. Come on, guys...

Nah sorry that's revisionist history at work He walks "the path of slaughter" and multiple games and sources talk about those that have fallen beneath his fist. Akuma REGULARLY kills martial arts masters in his quest to prove how strong he is. Typically they're just far beneath him with only figures like Goutetsu, Gouken, Gen and Bison being particularly noteworthy as challengers to him. Akuma is evil. At least one can argue that Oni is mad and deranged, possessed by the insane Satsui No Hadou that really dictates his actions. Akuma? Not so much. He's conscious of his decision making. I could argue that makes him MORE evil rather than someone driven insane.

Absolutely not 50/50. Just looking at them... Ken gets married. Not a joke. Ryu has his obsession with fighting reinforced. Not a joke. Chun-Li is LITERALLY AT HER DAD'S GRAVE. Honda's is about him with his students. It's lighthearted but not stupid. Zangief dances with totally-not-a-real-person Russian leader. A joke. Blanka is reunited with his mother. Not treated as a joke. Guile is talked out of MURDERING someone. Dhalsim goes home to his family. Lighthearted but not a joke. Then compare to SFAlpha where stuff is treated seriously. The core narratives and threat and drama is treated as legitimate. Since at least SF4, Capcom has had an obsession with undermining a lot of their own stuff and it's really annoying. Tekken is KNOWN for its joke endings but treats its CORE narrative as serious and dramatic. SF just can't seem to handle that because it veers too much into cartoon stupidity and OHHHH SOOOO WACKY moments I'm not against humor or for any kind of grim-dark tone...I just wish SF didn't seem so often like it was putting itself down

Oh I won't disagree with you about the stupidity of the retcons Bringing Gouken back was stupid AF even if he is one of my favorite characters to play. There was ZERO reason to do that and Gouken doesn't even factor into SF5. It was nothing but a cheap shock tactic of a character. Akuma has killed Goutetsu...and that's about it. Taking the killing of Gouken away from him was absolutely idiotic on Capcom's part It's one of the reasons I'm okay with a reboot at this point. They need the opportunity to tell the story COHERENTLY and cleanly from the beginning

I agree with basically everything you wrote @CESTUS III Akuma's dick-riding is detrimental to the series and its narrative. It's much more interesting to have Akuma be a bad match-up for Ryu in the way you described. Like, I'm sorry, if I had my way I'd have Gill demolish Akuma in a fight and do so by pointing out how utterly imbalanced Akuma's spirit is, making it impossible for him to beat someone as perfectly centered as Gill... ...and I don't even like Gill that much...but Akuma just needs the L THAT badly
-
I agree with the former but not the latter. Akuma should get humbled by someone. Potentially even someone like Gill. And I don't mean 'a close fight', I mean something should happen where Akuma eats a big L because it will reframe a lot of his character in a useful way. Meanwhile, he should not be Ryu's father. Ryu should be an orphan adopted and his dad is Gouken. Period. Akuma redoing Luke & Vader with Ryu is just weak

Natural disasters are not inherently evil. It's possible G is malevolent but it's also possible what he is might trigger events. Either way, Capcom was stupid for not making more stuff about G explicit to try and draw people in instead of going "Ooooh soooo mysterious" well past the time when people had patience for their bullshit storytelling.
