  1. I don't even know if you can call it late stage socialism when it never got the early and middle parts. It's more like early stage Soviet communism that had the totalitarian revolution and just stopped right there without even pretending to try it was going to make anything better for anyone. It's kind of brilliant, I guess? It never has to go through the whole thing with communism being unworkable because it never even gets to the part where it tries to do communism.
  2. Yeah, violent outbursts and being so far off the same page as his wife publicly aren't flags that the guy is doing great.
  3. Will Smith is that guy who is wildly successful beyond any realistic expectation, and still somehow ended up in need of like... serious life advice from regular dudes. It's like, what- does this guy have absolutely zero normal people friends in his life? I almost never say this, but there's a guy who legitimately belongs in therapy, if only so that someone can walk him through this shit.
  4. I had an idea once for a short story about a serial killer who only targets whoever currently holds the records for being the world's oldest person. Like really, who would suspect?
  5. I genuinely hope that's true, but given the way media works anymore that just seems wildly optimistic.
  6. I realize it's just someone's last name, but there are a bunch of campaign signs up on the roadsides here that say "Dykes for Sheriff"
  7. The never ending beta, aka the beatings will continue until morale improves:
  8. Jfc, what is this anime season. Last season I was barely watching two anime (though I think I missed out on Undead Murder Farce, need to check that out). Now I've got like 12. Not even sure I have time to keep up.
  9. Yeah, I was speaking generally, not trying to be a dick about specific cases- sorry.
  10. Insurance companies are just one of the several ways America fucks up the health care system, but they're definitely a big one. Even with stuff like Obamacare to fill the gaps, it requires a degree of proactive competency that a lot of chronically ill poor don't have in spades. Lot's of poor people don't even get hooked up with the free government programs they may qualify for until they have a medical emergency and a social worker on staff at the hospital start submitting application paperwork for them.
  11. I wasn't disagreeing with RSG3, just providing context on the specific way the US system is fucked up. You can walk in the ER and get six figures worth of emergency care guaranteed, but you can't get a $50 PCP visit that would have caught the problem if you can't come up with the $50.
  12. Technically it's available to just about anyone. You just need to use the ER as your primary care provider and be willing to have bill collectors hound you endlessly.
  13. So I'm wondering if we're going to see Vegapunk give Luffy some sort of techno-senzu bean. Because unless someone else is about to show up for the good guys, Oda is going to have to give Sanji a hell of a glow-up or I don't see them squeeking out of this.
  14. The United States has some of the very best healthcare in the world. We just also have the attitude that healthcare should be like clean air or equal protection under the law: if you can't afford it you don't deserve it. Because anything other than dystopia is socialism. 🙃
  15. Bonnie might not be able to hang on a raw power level, Pulling off some John Woo/Lara Croft/Neo in the Matrix shit level gun-fu, then landing that hit at the end- that's a lot of shine for a relatively minor character.
  16. My wife and I are both in an industry that has a hard time keeping enough skilled people, so we grew our income from pathetic to what would be arguably baller in a lot of areas. At the same time, her last job change had us move from an area that's super cheap to an area that's crazy expensive, so it's been kind of a wash. (Seriously, the heiress to the M&M Mars fortune lives like two streets over. There's a lot of fuck-you levels of rich here.) The biggest financial gain lately is just that fact that my kids are all school aged now so I don't have to drop $30k+ a year in daycare anymore. Still have to find something to do with them in the summer, but a win is a win.
  17. Even at its best in the prior beta, the rollback netcode would probably kill the game if it was pushed out in that state. The only thing that bugs me about them taking the time to get it right is that the waits in between betas are so long it's obvious this is a low priority project for the people working on it. Probably never should have talked about launch windows at all if they were going to back-burner it.
  18. My ex was in the Japanese language program at CMU during Obama's first presidential win, and one of the guest professors straight from Japan was talking to the students at the end of their class one day about how she was super excited to be going to her first American erection party.
  19. There's some deep, deep dumbfuckery in that quote. There's a reason vocational tech is it's own, separate schooling program.
