  1. I'm probably overthinking this, but looking at how videogames are perceived in the overall mainstream space and how little effort is being made to educate (most likely due to a lack of interest and the barrier of entry), it will become increasingly difficult when the medium matures and its audience simultaneously becoming younger, to properly educate about its roots. Not only because there's not much efficiently presented and chronicled data to go on online, but also because of the interactive element. Also, how do you show someone the importance of SF2 for 1on1 fighting games or Mario 64 for movement in a 3D space? You can't do it passively because it just looks like an old game to them, but if you ask someone to play them, it'll just (rightfully) feel really archaic. You basically have to take the word for it that, yes, those game were massively impactful. But unless you go back yourself, compared release dates, play what came before and what came after, there's really no reason to subjectively arrive at that same conclusion. On the other hand, you can just put someone in front of Citizen Kane for two hours and they'll get it.
  2. I wonder what kind of hatemail he sends to Urien or Rashid players if Zeku's slide already got him triggered this bad.
  3. Unbound would have been excellent without the Heat system. I gave up in Week 2 because it's such an insufferable feature. I understand why it's there because progression is tied to money, but if it's fundamentally unfun, then they need to rework the entire progression system instead. It's such a shame because Criterion still always nails the driving aspect.
  4. Its VR2 support is supposedly excellent in case one of those five people who bought the headset are online over here.
  5. The GT movie is a biopic though. It's about a guy who discovered his love and talent for racing through GT and became a professional driver. So basically just a very "standard" biographical movie that just happens to feature the racing sim called Gran Turismo. Pretty much the only reasonable way you could make a movie about that IP to be honest.
  6. It will be the standard for casual players, but no tournament player in their right mind is going to use Modern Controls. If anything I'd say the way forward will be how it is implemented now, as a choice. I doubt it'll ever be mandatory for legacy series like SF.
  7. I thought that was long confirmed already with the simplified inputs in Project L? In any case, it's not as black & white as it sounds. If you look at something like Power Rangers BFTG, which also has simple inputs, it's clear that you can still design a game with deep and complex mechanics and combo routes around it. I agree with @Jocelotthough in that such a fundamental design principle should not be messed with with reactionary patches. You either go that route or you don't IMO.
  8. Time will tell of course but Manon's medal system might be the first comeback mechanic done right. You don't get the buffs automatically as you have to actually land throws to power it up, but if you do so she'll be a real threat in round 3. Will be interesting to see how to go about balancing this. I hope she's not awful without any power-ups but it doesn't look like it so far.
  9. I know it's not the same playstyle and toolset but I feel like Manon currently fills the space that Laura occupied early in SFV. If she comes back it'll probably years down the line, similar how they only added Sakura and Sagat when there was enough diversity in V to not overwhelm the playerbase with shoto archetypes. But I'd rather have some characters back that skipped V to be honest, first and foremost Makoto, who I think could look phenomenal in this engine as a slightly older version of herself.
  10. I can see how it can look problematic on paper but I think we'll need to see how it pans out. The fact that it's limited to a resource for example makes it less obnoxious than a block button. Plus it can add to the mindgame aspect when your opponent is low on drive gauge and you try to bait the parry. I try not to be too skeptical about the mechanics here because they're so interconnected through that one bar that it's hard to say how it'll all turn out.
  11. And very ambiguous cross-ups, too, as it requires no directional input.
  12. Gief with Drive Rush is as scary as expected but they seem to balance it out by making him a sitting duck if he happens to not have access to it. Not looking forward to fighting him with any character but I hope some pros pick him up. Always enjoyed watching him in tournaments.
  13. How big is arcSys these days? Seems a bit nuts to me that they manage to support three games in parallel (even four during the time they did the last updates for FighterZ).
  14. I think SFIV is more akin to what FF7 was, in the sense that it brought a bunch of new people to the genre and revitalised it in regions where it wasn't popular anymore. But it's a bit nonsense anyway you turn it. I could also say that Monster Hunter World is Capcom's FF1 because it saved the company. Or that SFV is Capcom's FFXV because it launched as an unfinished mess that eventually got patched to a point where it's decent. You know what, I take it back, this is fun.
  15. Don't forget there's also a second version of 3) Big damage bullshit if your character is below 25% (?) health, which triggers a slightly different animation and does more damage.
  16. I can completely rule out Ken, Dhalsim, Blanka, Jaimie and Luke for myself but everyone else I'll give a shot. On the other hand there's nobody I feel really drawn towards. Manon is visually the most appealing to me but I'm not sure if her gameplan fits my preferences. JP is the opposite. Or I might just default back to Chun until someone else arrives via DLC, like I did in 5.
  17. The difference in art direction between 6 and everything that came before is so large I find it increasingly difficult to even make comparisons. In this new visual context I think most characters make sense and look good. The only one that still bothers me is Chun du to her legs making her default stance look weird, I think her bottom-heavy proportions worked better in the more cartoonish style from previous games.
  18. I just realise that we've seen the entire launch roster now. I wonder if they're going to show the rest* before launch or if they have something else up their sleeves to hype it up until June. *edit: the DLC characters
  19. I think I actually like Lily the most from that trailer? She's definitely reminiscent of Talim, but unlike the latter she doesn't come across as some kind of pedobait, but just a genuine "cute girl" archetype. Not sure if I'll play her but I found her instantly likeable. Even the thing with her clumsily messing up her Level 3 Super was charming. Cammy looks solid all around but doesn't really blow me away. I'll try her out for sure though, loved playing her in 4 but hated her in 5 so we'll see. Gief is fun to look at but, eh, if I want to play a grappler in SF6 I think I already have a certain other character I'm leaning more towards.
  20. I'm watching the replay right now and I feel kind of bad for Valmaster. Out of all these players he had to run into the single Dhalsim in the tournament, which from my experience is just straight up awful for Chun.
  21. It's a bit odd to see this conclude without any new announcement for SF6, but it suppose Capcom thinks a SF5 tournament doesn't have a big enough reach anymore for the audience they want to sell SF6 to. I've yet to catch up with the matches. Mena's not my favourite player but if he got out on top again he was obviously the best one that night. Would have been nice to see Zhen take it but on the other hand that could have ruined his drive for the future. Imagine what it would do to your ego if your first big tournament is the biggest tournament and you also win. I have no opinion on the 1 million prize thing. Monetary payments in professional competitions are so out of context from real life it's something I just don't bother spending time thinking about.
  22. I've been on and off through the years but I definitely stopped playing sometime last year when I got to Diamond, because like some others have said at the point the matchmaking starts failing miserably and I don't want to spend my evenings getting stomped by pro players and Warlords or whatever those upper titles are. I will say though that I probably would have quit earlier if they hadn't added Rose, because I was a bit tired of my other characters at that point and the one I was learning, Lucia, was still poop back then. I've also stopped my PS+ subscription because I don't really play anything else online so I'm really in waiting mode for SF6 now.
  23. I just randomly realised it will have taken Capcom longer to make SF6 than Nintendo to make a new Zelda by the time those next games are out. They're really taking their time with this, I hope it pays off both in terms of quality and mainstream success.
  24. Technically yes, but with Supers and Ultras being available in SFIV, you could at least get somewhat similar extensions (EX Tatsu into Ultra etc.). SFV was too limited in that sense (and a lot of others).
