Haha, that game looks dope! I may have to find that rom. speaking of old games, I played the original Raiden 1 arcade last night and holy F that game is ridiculous! It was the first shmup I played (the grocery store my grandma went to used to have a cabinet of it, 30-odd years ago)… I remember dying a lot and being out of quarters very quickly…. I was expecting to breeze through the first few levels now that I’m older, but nope, lol. Got absolutely smoked early on.

Oh yeah, for sure. My Obsidian Hitbox and my PS4 Hori Fighting Edge work great on my PS5 (with exception for the ShareFactory app). What I am worried about is now that an official PS5 specific stick will be released (after Aug 31st anyway), that there will be a future PS5 firmware update that won’t allow for PS4 controllers to work anymore… Either that, or future PS5 games won’t allow for legacy controllers (which a PS4 controller technically is). Probably won’t be an immediate thing (if it ever happens), but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was an eventuality.

I was going to to get this stick for PS5 but decided to just get something else after looking at reviews of the Xbox SS/X version - I think they made some odd design choices with this thing (mostly in regards to cable management). I just hope Sony doesn’t go back on their “official PS4 controllers will work on PS5 games” before something better comes out.

I just did my first 1cc ever. It did it in Natsuki Chronicles, and goddamn I love this game. My run was pretty ugly and I did it on easy, but am just happy I was able to do it. Now I really gotten tighten up my gameplay and routes and do it on Medium.

SFV was always the worst for me for the first couple of days after a big update… Not saying its online is great to begin with, but it may be closer to what you’re used to in a few days

I stumbled on this video last night and figured I’d post it for you (or anyone else), if you’re interested: I am not sure how solid the advice is, but it seems like a good structure that can’t hurt. I then watched his recommended games for beginners and picked up Natsuki Chronicles and had an absolute blast on easy. Some parts so far were challenging but manageable. It never felt like I couldn’t beat it, and it was usually pretty clear why I died. It just seems like a good game to really dig into. There are quite a few beginner UI options, but honestly, I disabled most of them as they were putting too much on the screen, taking my attention away from the enemies and bullets. I have a feeling I’m really going to love getting back into this genre. I’ve always loved fast-paced games with an emphasis on movement, and replaying a short game while trying to perfect my run is right up my alley. Plus the OSTs have so far been awesome. It also feels really nice to play these on stick.

I haven’t killed any of the merchants either, and in fact, I always go back to the first merchant if I need arrows as he was the friendliest, and I like to support that…. Despite not mattering at all, as it’s a videogame 🤣

Have you seen the secret walls that take like 50 hits to break? Who the F would hit a wall that much? I started having a panic attack when wondering if all of the ”hidden path” messages I came across were right.

I appreciate the recommendation! I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. R-Type Final 2 is the first shmup I’ve played since Ikaruga on the Dreamcast like 17 years ago, and even then, I didn’t play them that much, so I definitely have a lot to catch up on!

Just had an interesting idea… If a few people here are willing, we could do monthly challenges, where we pickup a new shmup (or one we haven’t played in a while) and at the end of the month, we post our best scores, or how far we got with one credit/continue, etc. MAME games would probably be the best (cheapest) way to go. I haven’t really put much thought into it, so we’d definitely have to nail down the logistics more, but it sounds like a fun idea.

Hey guys, Just figured it would be nice to have a thread specifically for Shmups (arcade-style shoot ‘em ups). Feel free to post about games, scores, tips, what you’re playing/working on, etc - and have fun! I just bought R-Type Final 4 (PS4) and am very excited! I’m hoping to one day do a no-miss (no death) run.

Nice! I loved these games when I was younger, but I kinda forgot about them tbh (the last one I played regularly was Ikaruga on Dreamcast). Bought Cuphead this weekend on switch to play with my nephew and I had so much fun during the aviation sections. He left, and I went upstairs, looked at my arcade stick I bought for FGs, and decided to look into a good new game to get. R-Type Final 2 caught my eye (mostly because I liked that it was newer graphics, was native 16:9, and seemed to have a bit more strategic gameplay). Game’s whooping my ass though… I’m in the late 30’s and should probably be playing on the “Kids” difficulty setting 🤣. Once I’m done this (which will take a while from what I gather), I’ll go into some more classic ones (possibly a vertical scroller).
