    Saw this question posed on Reddit, and I'd love to hear your opinions.

    I know character stories are short, and can be shallow at worst. But there are some good ones out there, and some that give these characters some genuine moments. So i'm curious to my SF Story Fam, which SFV Character story was your favorite?

    EDIT: Copy/Paste my answer from Reddit

    My favorites are:
    Chun-Li: Seeing a bit of her story before SF Alpha, and loved seeing Chun-Li for the first time embrace the motherly side of her character with her and Li-Fen

    Ed: LOVED seeing a more vulnerable side of Balrog we've never seen before.

    Kolin: I think out of all the character stories, hers was the strongest when it comes to presentation of backstory and motivations.

    Sakura: Romance in Street Fighter hasn't been a key element in the franchise, but I loved how sweet this one was. Also nice to see Sakura move forward with her story and mature instead of being stuck as a High School girl.

    Rose: Because of all of the story and lore theories that have popped up since Rose's story mode.

    Dan: Because it was stupid and funny and I had a great time.

    E. Honda: Best moment of his character story was this... I mean this.

    Take the endings with a grain of salt, especially the Alpha 3 ones, since it just feels like a different storyline compared to the Alpha 1 & 2 canons. But Alpha's canon is weird. Alpha 2 is a retcon of Alpha 1, with some minor differences.

    Firstly, I don't think PR Chun-Li is SF canon.

    Secondly, and personally, we get tired of the same rehashed story over and over again. That's why it was such a treat that Shadaloo was seemingly "destroyed" at the end of SFV and Chun-Li moved on to a new chapter of her life in SFIII.

    However, if they end up retconing everything in the SF story, at least give Chun-Li's revenge story the proper ending it deserves.

    Some of the SFV ladder and some of the SFI can be what ifs. The others are representations or retcons of preexisting endings (like SFZ Guile and SF2 Sagat). Some even are expanded versions of the endings, like SF4 Vega where we know that he has "defeated" Juri.

    Also, Nakayama mentions in an interview that the intention was "to recreate past content that left a strong impression with our fans", and, from what we could see in AE, the recreation of  those endings was part of this strong impression.  Guess Vega committing suicide wasn't....

    You know what's the problem with the suicidal trailer?

    SF5 confirms that Nash's SFZ2 death is the canon one at least 4 times:
    - A trailer;
    -Nash's story mode;
    -Vega's story mode;
    -A Shadow Falls
    -Nash's SFZ ladder ending.

    Besides the trailer itself, how many times over the past 12 years (JEEEEZUS!) "Vega committed suicide with a explosion" was mentioned in SF4? Or even after that?

    Answer: NONE!

    And they had quite a few chances to do so, like in the SF4/SSF4 artwork book, SSF4, SSF4AE, USF4, SF5, the Shadaloo C.R.I. profiles, SF5 AE, USF2, Street Fighter 30th Anniversay Collection, SF5CE, How to Design Capcom Fighting Characters, Street Fighter Beyond the World, Street Fighter - Those Stronger Than Me (the artbook sold at the SF exhibition), and I didn't even counted the compilations like Artworks Ha and Artworks Kiwami.

    How many times Capcom showed (or referred to) us Gouki defeating/killing Vega after the explosion trailer was released?
    -USF2 (the latest installment of SF2. they could have just removed the SGS scene if they didn't want it there. but... guess what, Capcom even REVAMPED it from HD Remix with Vega throwing the cape before being SGS. Just like they did wth the Hyper SF2 Anniversary Edition);
    -SF5AE (Gouki's SF2 path ending is the only one that shows Vega mortally wounded);
    -SF 30th Anniversary Collection (although I don't count those profiles as canon because of inconsistencies, it does mention Vega losing to Gouki. Capcom of Japan even reprinted the All About Street Fighter book in their collector's edition with the real SF japanese story);
    -The 2019 April Fools joke with G. It shows Gouki SGS Vega.

    Honorable mention: Daigo Ikeno mentions that Vega's alterate, torn, costume in SF4 was designed after his fight with Gouki. Who knows if Ikeno knew about the suicidal trailer.

    Can Capcom change their mind and say that Vega commited suicide, with or without fighting Gouki? Yes they can! It's their franchise. But that's not the message they are sending at the moment. And... to be honest, I highly doubt they will touch with that part of the story again....

    Er... wrong again.

    Did you forget this timeline released in 2018 from SF Beyond the World book (it also touches on the Shoryuken discussion you guys were also having)? Here you clearly can see that SFZ3 and SF2 are separate events that happens at separate times:

    1: Chronology of events during the Street Fighter series
    2: The events occurring during the Street Fighter series are connected, and constitute a very long story. Here we have loosely sorted these events, separated by game.
    Moreover, you should pay attention to the events occurring in character endings that contradict the general story. Furthermore, as the story of Street Fighter EX takes place in a parallel setting, we’ve left it out¹.
    3: Time of the works
    4: Works
    5: General events
    6: 1987
    1991
    7: Date uncertain
    8: Ryu and Ken, seeking to become the “strongest fighter”, depart to battle street fighters.
    9: Ryu beats Sagat with a Shoryuken. Sagat vows revenge.
    10: Vega travels the world, searching for strong fighters.
    11: The “Psycho Drive”, a weapon that would supply Vega’s body with unlimited Psycho Power, becomes operational.
    12: The Psycho Drive is destroyed by the fists (it could also be interpreted as efforts) of various/several fighters, and Shadaloo is officially declared destroyed.
    13: Vega starts the “Living Incubator” project, that would develop new substitute bodies for him.
    14: Abel is born as an artificial man, and is rescued by Nash. Nash subsequently disappears.
    15: The World Fighting Championship is organized by Shadaloo - which now acts in the shadows (in secret). Vega is after Ryu’s body, who defeated Sagat.
    16: S.I.N’s CEO Seth rebels against Shadaloo.
    17: S.I.N is destroyed.
    18: Bison rescues the young Ed from S.I.N’s ruins.
    19: Sagat estranges himself from Shadaloo.
    F.A.N.G takes Sagat’s former place among the Four Kings.
    20: Shadaloo launches the “Black Moons Project”. NY’s zone is struck by a violent electromagnetic wave and plunges into chaos.
    21: The Kanzuki house calls fighters from all over the world to help.
    22: Through the fighters's fist, they crush the “Black Moons Project”. Shadaloo is destroyed again.
    23: Chun Li becomes the guardian of the young hacker Li Fen.
    24: Ed leaves Balrog and forms his own independent organisation.
    25: Tom, Alex’s guardian, is attacked by a mysterious blonde fighter.
    26: Li Fen, the girl Chun Li took into care, is abducted by a mysterious organisation.
    27: Alex begins his trip to avenge Tom.
    28: Hugo and Poison found the new pro-wrestling group Huge Wrestling Army
    29: Alex departs once again to test himself.
    ¹ So… EX’s characters are canon (otherwise they wouldn’t have mentioned Darun’s role in ASF), but their games’ story isn’t.

    Thanks to @Miðgarðsormfor the translation (back in 2018).

    No, you're not. That was the 3rd promo trailer for the SF4 released on late february of 2009.

    I dunno if Sagat's role is still valid for Zero 3, since he's still with Shadaloo in SF2, leaving the organization during/after the tournament. That backstory (with Vega asking him to go back to Shadaloo) would fit better for SF4.

    Rose's story begins with her having a sparring match with her apprentice. Menat simply repeating her Master's words is enough to fill her with excitement, though Rose believes she should focus more on lessons than words alone. Rose has plans to travel for the day, which Menat is able to accurately predict. Running errands seems like a minor thing that Menat can handle, but Rose tells the eager young apprentice that this is something she must handle herself. She then leaves for India.

    She meets up with Oro to share her concerns on the strange energy she's been sensing. Bison and his Psycho Power has vanished from the world, but the energy she's sensing is different from Bison's Psycho Power. Oro can also sense that the energy is different from Bison's. The energy itself contains no evil and feels as though it's aligned with nature. Rose can sense that as well, but the overwhelming force of it is too great for her to ignore. That's why she searched for the source of this power in order to challenge it. The individual that holds this power is "The Fool", also known as G.

    After the battle ends, G is now convinced that Rose can understand who he is, as well as what's going to happen to them in the future. Rose is struggling with the vision...since the vision shows the end of everything. G assures her that the vision they're both seeing is their inevitable fate, as well as the fate for the Earthlings and the entire universe. Rose still isn't sure who G is. Despite that, the vision she took a glimpse at was enough to convince her that the world was going to meet its end....and nothing could be done to prevent it from happening. Rose believed the removal of Bison and Shadaloo would allow the world to escape a future crisis. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case.

    The distraught Rose finds herself back home with the alarmed Menat quickly running her a bath to calm her down. Bison's Psycho Power nearly pushed the world towards destruction. Even though that threat has been dealt with, the path towards destruction still remains. Rose was so focused on Bison's impact on the world that she didn't notice the world was already going downhill. Some unknown evil in the past is what put the world on this current course. If that evil could be stopped before sprouting, the imminent destruction of the world could be halted. Rose believes she's the only one capable of handling things. Her past self is needed for this task. To start things all over again. From zero...

    Chun-Li to Rose: I know I'm destined to fight, but I WILL put and end to it someday.

    I find this one to be very insightful. On the surface, it shows that Chun-Li is determined to finish her fight for justice, which she does as in SFIII, she moves on from that motivation. But also, recall to Chun-Li's prologue in USF4, Chun-Li was sensing some hesitation in her fight, and in her ending, she resolves to continue being a cop as she and Guile drive off. Chun-Li is confident that her fight for justice will end one day, but that resolve of hers was not always there.

    Rose to Chun-Li: In pursuing a certain individual, you invite the company of danger.

    Surface level quote: Chun-Li pursues M. Bison and Shadaloo, she'll encounter many a dangerous foe. And she certainly has:  Assuming all the cutscenes and fight-your-rival dialogues, and OVAs are canon, since then, Chun-Li has faced Balrog, Vega, FANG, M. Bison, Juri, Gen, and possibly more. Each dangerous individuals in their own right. I'm not sure if this quote was just Rose telling Chun-Li what she already knows. Or possibly, what if Rose is forewarning Chun-Li's future, and that in pursuit of Urien to save Li-Fen as in SFIII, Chun-Li will uncover something deep that shall not only put her life at stake, but the fate of the whole world as well. (I may just be overthinking things like I always do with these quotes)

    Overall, these are great. They don't feel out of place, and I don't sense any deep relationship connection with either of them. It's unclear how much these two interact within the canon, but my guess is probably not as much. Which is stange, since both are connected to M. Bison.

    It has been a long while before a Character Story mode was this deep and plot driven. And I enjoyed it very very much.

    Granted, I was one of the few who didn't want Rose to come back, and that Menat would've been the perfect successor to Rose. But I'm glad she's back now. And the story mode foreshadows something dire ahead. Even after defeating Shadaloo, we're still headed to the End of Days. Rose mentioning Glacier falling into the Ocean (or something along those lines), was that a reference to SFIII?

    I'm not all for retconing and time travel. Ed Boon and MK has done than many a times already. So I'm not sure how I feel about Rose possibly going back in time to change the fate of everything. But hey, at least the plot is moving forward a little bit. And I am here for it!
