I finished my first run of Last Faith this morning. Definitely one of the best metroidvanias I've ever played and I still highly recommend it. Think I'm going to go for another run with a different build now.

I regularly see it on sale on GOG and Steam (often for like $5)- don't know how often it's on sale on consoles. It should run on pretty much any relatively modern PC.

EDIT: $4 on GOG right now, grab that shit: https://www.gog.com/en/game/fightn_rage

I didn't like the Takeover, felt super bland to me.

Did you play Fight N Rage? I think it's the peak of the genre, it's very well tuned with so much depth to the combat.  Difficulty is well balanced also, challenging but fair. Only baffling design choice was making you unlock the training mode- it unlocks easily, but I suspect a lot of people missed a lot of the depth by playing through it a single time using the old school approach. Training mode really gives you a taste of what the characters have to offer if you dig a little deeper.

VGMF, DMC edition. This is the kind of atmosphere I really liked in DMC1 and 3- the imagery it evokes is an example of what I wish the series had leaned way harder into with its world building. Make it way more evil, occult, and grounded in established and old religious stories. Keep Dante as a cocky jackass with inhuman power in a world that was otherwise made to be legitimately terrifying.

It's $80 a year. They increased it by $20 and I noped out on my renewal. I have more games than I have time to play so the free games were meh for me. If I still bought my fighting games on PlayStation like I did last gen, they'd have me over a barrel, but I buy my fighting games on PC. Well except MK, but I haven't touched MK1 in months and have no plans to go back at this point. Ironically I only have my Nintendo Online subscription now.

Mainline Dante is super corny, but that's fine when the gameplay is great. I also like the corniness juxtaposed over the occult vibes in DMC1 and 3, and wish they had leaned harder into the evil side of things with the world around Dante. The direction 4 and 5 went with the tone/environment was super disappointing- I'd have rather seen the DmC art/world design continued without the stupid politics/try hard edginess than the anime drek we got in 4 and 5. But again, the gameplay is what ultimately really matters, and 5 delivered there.

Edit: to clarify, I agree that the story is dogshit in DmC. I was just saying I'm surprised more bitch-titted soy chuggers didn't like it. And yes, its boss fights sucked in contrast to everything but 2.

Got to disagree with him about the story and character changes, but I still maintain that the game is way better than it gets credit for. The world/art design (not the characters themselves) is really cool, the gameplay is still very good (certainly more fun than using V in 5), and the music is at least less cringey than the nu metal in 3/4 or "bang, bang, bang" in 5. Honestly, I'm surprised that the online nerdosphere didn't lap up the ham fisted Daily Show approved story, given its dominant political preference.

    In regards to DmC....

I feel the game got appropriately shit on when it first released. No lock on, stricter color coded enemy rules, Tameem, etc.

The Definitive Edition however (which never came to PC for whatever reason) fixes a lot of the issues I had, gameplay wise.

Story is still dumb as fuck, dialog and characters are still whack as hell, but as an action game I really liked a lot of things it did thematically and mechanically. The way they represent the "demon world" as a chaotic and constantly changing mirror of the real world is still cool as fuck to me. The soundtrack also goes hard as shit, I dig the more "nu metal" style, even tho I also love shit like Devil Trigger from V.

As an aside: I also really like the idea of showing a  young, arrogant and selfish Dante shaping up into the mega confident godslayer we see in all the other games. It's too bad that portrayal falls flat in its execution throughout the game.

dmc did things i liked alot.
1, i really like after u finish destroyin enemies you get that slo mo cuts to dante doing cool poses or face expressions. they kept that in dmc5 which i appreciated. its satisfying to get slo mo cool shots when u kill the last enemy.  free camera instead of fixed.  3. the red/green aesthetic wasnt important, but alot of the imagery and set design i liked. espcially in the "spirit world" locations. it had some things going for it.
and oh yea, vergil's doppleganger move. they put that in dmc5 too.

Great clip bit it does make me wonder how western games still really fail at selling the impact of combat in their action games. Those sound effects are weak, those hit stop animations and impact effects from Princes weapons are kinda...weak.

I don't really understand why I can play an FPS from a western dev and pick up a shotgun that feels like it could carve out a new Grand Canyon, but then I play an action game from the west and it feels like I have toilet paper rolls for boxing gloves or something.

Reminds me of Ebony and Ivory. Shoot them in DMC1 and they look and sound like they could put a hole in the earth and hit just as hard. Big ass fully custom 1911s. Then you play DmC and they are tiny little twisted up Baretta's that sound like Cap Guns and can barely stop the wind.

I agree with everything you said here. First thing, don't harass people. WTF is wrong with you. At the end of the day it's a video game. There are more high quality games released than you have the time to play, buy something else. I think I have a back log taller than T.Hawk at this point. You can express your displeasure without harassing voice actors/face models etc. Don't support the developer if you are unhappy. All they care about is your money anyway.

As for the first part of your post, for the life of me I don't get the rationale of taking a traditionally attractive characters, hiring an attractive woman to be her face model, and then intentionally making her homely. It makes no sense. You want to be progressive. Hire an average woman, scan her face, and put it in the game. Let her make some money because, lets be honest here, she's not going to have the same opportunities as beautiful model.

The divergence between Eastern and Western Studios is crazy. I mean Western Studios will find a 10 out of 10 women. Make her look like a 5 and get a surprised Pikachu face when people call them out on it. Eastern studios will higher attractive people and scan them into their game so they can have an attractive character. This goes for smaller devs like Shift Up (Stellar Blade) to well known developers like Kojima Productions.

Side note: I find out it humorous when they were calling out Stellar Blade for having an unrealistic character model. Finding out she's a based on a model and instead of taking the L. They tried to act like she looked like a 12 year old. The woman is 32.

MJ is supposed to be well hot. Isn't that her overall design since day one? The in model character isn't. It's even more obvious because Black Cat in game looks good and similar to comic ver. HAVING SAID THAT harassing the IRL person isn't helping the issue and only further perpetuates the bad stereotype that gamers are socially inept.

Tbh, this is a general issue of social media allowing a lot of socially inept individuals access to express their opinions.

So many gamers are fucking awful people; just spoiled and entitled and thinking they're in the right at all times. I honestly feel bad for community outreach managers at game devs having to deal with these people.

Damn, who knows how many copies they could have sold if it were for the boycott and general hostility of the gaming press towards the game. I guess will never know. This should be a lesson to publishers on how much the opinion of Twitter/X and the gaming press truly means.  👀
