Penny Blood Characters, Setting, and Story Details Shared

Studio Wildrose and Matsuzo Machida have released some new information on the story and characters of Penny Blood. This is the game that is part of the Double Kickstarter with Armed Fantasia. The majority of the staff on Penny Blood are ones who worked on the Shadow Hearts series. Penny Blood will be a dark and tragic gothic horror JRPG set in the 1920s. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

While Penny Blood will not be a continuation or a spin-off of the Shadow Hearts series, it takes quite a few cues from it in its story and characters. According to an interview with designer and writer Machida, Penny Blood takes place in the 1920s because Shadow Hearts skipped over it. Koudelka’s setting was the late 1890s, while the first two Shadow Hearts games were from 1913 to 1915. Shadow Hearts 3 skips to around 1929, fitting Penny Blood between Covenant and From the New World.
Despite all of marketing around Penny Blood’s gothic horror influences, there will be comedic elements. It will have a similar balance to Shadow Hearts Covenant. The story was serious, but there were comedic characters and side quests.

The plot follows Matthew Farrell, a private detective. During an investigation at a New York mental hospital, he encounters some bizarre monsters. He uses his hidden powers to defeat them, and travels from America to Asia to Europe to solve a case. Some locales he will visit include North Tarrytown (A.K.A. Sleepy Hollow) and Asakusa.

It is unknown how many party members will appear in Penny Blood but so far we know of three. Matthew is an Irish-American and a private eye. He is a veteran from World War I, and can use Fusion to turn into a monster. According to an interview with Machida, the team created Matthew to have a different perspective than Yuri or Johnny from Shadow Hearts.
Emilia is the heroine of the game, and is a member of the British secret intelligence. She visited Japan as a bodyguard for the American ambassador. Emilia is also part cyborg. Machida has stated that Emilia may be the most powerful party member in terms of battle.
The third character we know about is Suseri Otsuki, a Japanese teenager who is also a “miko strategist” for Kamuzumi. Kamuzumi is a Japanese organization for defeating monsters. She joins Matthew and Emilia after they save her in Japan, and she uses holy mirrors in battle. Unlike the more aggressive Emilia, Suseri is a quiet “yamato nadeshiko” type.

Matthew will start the game with Demna, the Crownless Knight. This is a Fusion monster with no element, and is a manifestation of the emptiness and loneliness in Matthew’s heart. Demna is a balanced Fusion monster, and can fight well in any situation. This is Matthew’s default Fusion, and Demna will gain more powers as the story advances.

The battle system will be turn-based, and every movement you make will require you to skill check with the Psycho Sigil. This is based on the Judgment Ring from Shadow Hearts. Each character’s Psycho Sigil looks different; Matthew’s looks like a knight’s emblem, while Emilia’s looks like a mechanic heart. A light will travel from one end of the Sigil to the other, and there are blue circles on the route. Whenever the light travels through a blue circle, the player has to press a button at the right timing. You can destroy small fry instantly with a perfect Psycho Sigil input. Studio Wildrose plans on implementing monsters you can only defeat with this method.

You will also be able to encounter the Sigil Spirit to unlock more circles in the game. In Shadow Hearts, there was a Ring Spirit that offered items to increase how many areas there were in your Judgment Ring. When you opened more nodes, your character could attack more times per turn.

Back in Shadow Hearts Covenant and From the New World, you could line up your characters together and create combo moves. Penny Blood will bring this back, along with unique actions only available in a combination attack. The conditions for a combination attack will depend on the characters’ conditions and affinities, but it also requires player input. Discovering the various combinations and buttons is part of the battle system’s charm, according to Machida. Unlike in Shadow Hearts, characters will attack simultaneously rather than one after the other.

Watched the Sonic 2 movie last night with my son and gotta say I was pleasantly surprised by it.  I felt the say way about the first one and this one may have been better than the first one.  After the huge debacle of how Sonic looked initially for the movies, the series so far is probably one of the best video game to movie conversions out there.

Penny Blood looks pretty good! You can tell this is really the work of Matsuzo Machida and the music of Yoshitaka Hirota. The atmosphere, the period setting, the unsettling, dark music, the menus, it reminds you of Koudelka/Shadow Hearts.

Haru's had that set of doors puzzle that was kind of annoying, and a lot of the enemies in there are only weak to Nuke making most of your team kinda useless. Otherwise I didn't mind it so much.

I think with the boat by the time you get there Persona 5 itself has started wearing out its welcome. You're nearing the 100 hour mark at that point if you haven't blown past it already, and even the writers are starting the lose the plot and themes, this is one spot where they really drop the ball by having the party browbeat Anne into being a sex object as a distraction even tho the first arc of the game is about how you shouldn't do that to people. Games running out steam at that point imo and you can feel it in multiple spots.

So with that complaint someone explain to me why I bought P5 Royal lmao.

Hot take but Persona 5 is one of the few RPGs with good dungeons. Yea even before 04 RPG dungeons where mostly doodoo. They don't provide a unique experience from the overworld, it's the same experience condensed. Dungeons just a place to funnel the combat. Persona 5 actually has unique mechanics for its dungeons that give them purpose outside of being a combat funnel. FPS Dungeon Crawlers like the Etrian series (and even they have the map gimmick) understood the dungeons in most RPGs are kinda pointless and everyone's really there for the combat and builds so they copy paste the part that barely matters to focus on the part that does. Recent example of this for me is Bravely Default series. I don't remember the dungeons for the most part beyond theme, the sand one, the ruins one, Yada Yada, but I do remember all the combat and I remember the bosses of the dungeons for damn sure.

On the flip side one of the best parts of FF7 is when you leave Midgar and travel through a bunch of "mini dungeons" that are like 10 minutes long and you're making consistant progress across the world map. The pacing is just excellent and you feel like stuff constantly happening and you're always making progress and finding new stuff. It's great.

im enjoying soul hackers 2 but it has this problem that like every jrpg made after like 04 has where all the devs  came together and decided the dungeons have to suck ass and be the least enjoyable part of the game.

I'm telling you guys they can make a breath of fire spiritual sequel. have like a giant dragon on the cover looking all majestic id call it hot ass breath: legend of the dragon.

then get black dog on character design, yoko taro on the script, you bring in unchained Sakuraba and Michiko Naruke for the soundtrack and finally you gotta get some cheap ass company to make it prob gust so no world map and empty looking areas in general but at least the characters will look like the artwork. dozens sold!!

I actually don't think they can. BoF 1 & 2  still fall under Capcom Publication while 3 and 4 were self published by Square. So it would ultimately be up to them and their willingness to play nice with each other.

Also, keep in mind Squee's last two BoF attempts were also colossal failures. So they're likely another reason Squee is hesitant about going back to the series.

Their most recent one was a few years ago. it was a mobile game that was so universally hated in Japan it was pulled from their digital market place after a few months and not even released in outside of Japan. The endeavor before that was Dragon Quarter for PS2. the less talked about that the better.

I am too. Especially since all of them completely miss the point of the series.

Indeed. Wild Arms 1 and 2 were so much fun.  Wild Arms 3 was OK I just hated how tedious it was. The radar system was absolutely fucking dumb.

I don't know who holds the rights to it these days but I'd really love to see a remake of new entry of Legend of Legaia. That game is fucking fiiiiiiiire.

I was so over leveled from side questing, I walked all over him. That said, it was a long ass fight.

Side note: Outside of maxing a few classes, I literally have nothing to do now. As far as I can tell I've done every side quest. I finished off the the five post game super bosses last night. 😔 Guess I'll have to wait for the expansion. I need to start playing fighting games again anyway.
