To be clear. I don’t really have anything against Strive and I typically prefer GG type games… but when I played it, it just didn’t do anything for me.

that said, SFV is not my favorite game either… but I already own it and know how to play it.

So… I’ve been gone a while, mostly to to my job being complete shit for the last year.

Short version, now have a new job and may have time to play people again. Not sure if here is the best place but last time I was around we were playing SFV… kinda missed the strive boat though.

To be honest I've just been busy with life stuff. Mostly work. Work has been miserable since about January (due to COVID fallout among other things), and it hasn't left me any real time for fighting games or other stuff. Been spending lots of time looking for a new job honestly, sometimes money isn't worth it.

Which at the moment includes GG:Strive. I may pick it up eventually, but I just don't have the time at the moment to learn a new game and... I played the most Recent Beta, and was not overly impressed. Didn't hate it or anything, but just kinda left with a "that was okay" sort of feeling (Played sol & pot because the bastards want to try and sell me Jam/Dizzy later).

I appreciate the thoughts though, and I still exist if people @ me

That aside, I will have time off and on this week so whoever can just @me when you have time, and hopefully I will (my schedule is pure chaos right now).

So combos work differently in KI, they (mostly) are not something you learn, but something you need to adapt on the fly.

Combos basically follow a cancel structure like you would get in an anime game:

    opener>[double>linker]xn >ended.

you can also choose to do a manual instead of a double, which is basically an sf style link.

Linkers are basically special moves, and doubles are normals.

The core system is that heavy doubles/linker build up huge amounts of potential damage (which are cashed out with the ender), but are piss easy to break on reaction, light doubles do minimal damage but are unreactable.

The other core thing is that, when someone fails a break they are locked out for a bit, allowing the attacker to pile on damage. In addition the attacker can do a counter break, effectively they intentionally drop their combo, but if you tried to break when they do that,  you get destroyed (meaning that easy to break heavy double could be a trap).

on top of that, your combo ender gets stronger based on how long the combo goes (you will see bars fill up between 1-4), so there’s a risk reward thing for long combos.

    Other smaller notes:
-potential damage works like white life in SFV so you can try a reset to build out silly damage.
-combo breakers remove all potential damage
-Enders have different functions such as oki, damage, meter, juggle, etc...
-characters have unique mid combo mechanics as well (spinal does triples, Hisako has delayed doubles, etc...)
-EX moves must be broken by timing your break on 3 of 5 hits which creates other mind games.

It sounds like a lot, but it’s honestly pretty intuitive once you get a handle on it. The tutorial is a bit wordy but honestly it’s really good.

    Other non combo related notes:
-almost everything cancels and causes a juggle state. So overheads hurt, anti-airs hurt.
-shadow counter is a really neat version of alpha counter. It punishes a hit after the initial guard cancel, so it’s kills autopilot and some moves but is super punishable against more patient play.
-Instinct mode (think V trigger but weaker) is built by taking damage but built more by breaking combos.
-characters have throw mechanics unique to them. (Eg Jago can cancel throw into EX).

Again I don’t disagree, and I’m not against having a filter available. I just think people are way overselling how bad wifi is, and by extension setting themselves up for disappointment with the effectiveness of the filter.

    Ahem.

I won’t try to “justify” wifi but, the reality is that it is the only viable option for a huge number of people. In addition, wifi is fine 90%+ of the time, it’s just become a scape goat for all connection problems.

like with rollback netcode, wifi filters are being treated as a panacea... and they just aren’t. Bad connections will still be bad because physicis.

Part of the problem with SFV and SF4 specifically is that offense is really shit in both games.

SF4 also had ridiculous defense also but got around it with it’s crazy wake up pressure.

SF5 deals with it by making defense even crappier than the already gimped offense.

this is why I’ve often said about things like catch and release grabs (aka Makoto) or rekkas being too much for SFV. Everything is so gimped that tools like that would be overwhelming

    Burst.

Burst is arguably the best comeback mechanic ever, and also one of the best mechanics ever full stop.

Rapid/Roman Cancel gets an honorable mention.
