This i guess have been VERY intentional... given USA hobby of get mass shooting every tuesday, maybe people in charge of american/western version did'nt liked the idea of bunch of characters being dead by machine gun fire

Have Sabretooth defeating them in combat is easier to sell as he knocked them unconscious or something

They should've removed the bullet shells on the ground, then... 😛

Anyway, I'm laughing at the further confusion between Birdy (her actual name) and Birdie and now I can't stop imagining BIRDIE in her place, lol. Whoever translated that didn't know Marvel so well...

Even if it doesn't seem like a malicious laugh, I'd always thought Chun would've been a person that respected all styles of combat, no matter how unorthodox they are.

I don't think she's referring to Blanka's style of combat. I'd think she saw him doing the tours with the tourists and laughing because Blanka's antics scare the tourists themselves. I mean, of course no one risks anything if BLANKA is their guide in the jungle, but imagine if he's exposing them to a freaking JAGUAR who's a bit too close, for example... someone is bound to freak out, even if Blanka can just scare away the "kittie" with a roar.

  3. Damn, I KNEW I should've avoided the thread.
Anyway, I can understand the excitement (because I'm excited as well), but let's be honest with ourselves, guys: did Capcom ever have a stellar record regarding storytelling?

    Exactly.
I don't know why, all of a sudden, should we expect far more than that. The vast majority of the arcade courses would be focused on telling us more or less who the character is, rather than what the character actually does in a larger-scope story. That is to say, arcade mode mainly would just reiterate what we already know about them. At best, they will focus on some nice interaction, like how did two specific characters get to know each other; nothing more. Even the World Tour would reveal faaaar less than everyone here seems to expect, come on: our avatars would travel to the various Wordl Warriors, train with them, maybe learn what they're doing now. Sure, there will be plenty of easter eggs, obscure characters who can give us a tip or two... But the general story won't progress much beyond "Ken is a hobo and JP is pretty much still there". IF Capcom is smart, there will be SOME small reveal along the seasons, which could help make SOME of the new characters relevant to the "general story" and progress it somehow, but don't expect a new Hamlet or War and Peace. Hell, they still don't care at all about differences between the Japanese and the International versions of their game, did you see the comic where Mel starts following his father at 5-6-7-8-whothehellknowsanymore year old (oh, btw "Sambal" was ヤーリキ yāriki in the original Japanese. Still completely made up)? Come on.

I just wanted to make sure to throw in support for the official Luke fanclub that is building up. After reading him in the comic and seeing him in the demo now, he's an awesome character. Super likeable while still feeling like a genuine dude. What a bro.

As any Popeye expy should be.

A pity Alex (or Abel!) didn't have comics or anything else supporting him at the time, anyway.

    Manon alt

It seems we just can't have a French character without the obligatory The Rose of Versailles reference, huh? Nice alt anyway, always dreamt of using Oscar François de Jarjayes to throw people around. If only she had Manon's nasty throws (and even better, her Drive Parry!) when she led the Storming of the Bastille... 😔

    AND WHAT? 👀

That’s a joke clearly because Fang is not officially Chinese. He’s from fake China or some other fictional Asian country.

To be fair, Nguuhao is Thai. งูเห่า Nguuhào, "cobra", from งู nguu "snake" and เห่า hào "cobra", also used to mean "evil and treacherous" in figurative language.

EDIT: In my headcanon, though, F.A.N.G is Laotian purely because ງູເຫົ່າ ngūhao in Lao language has the same meaning as in Thai (Thai and Lao are mutually intelligible and share much of their vocabulary, they're basically two closely related dialects just written with two different alphabets) and SF already has other Thai fighters, lol. 😛 DON'T spread this misinformation, anyway. 🤣

But guess that ship sank as soon @bakfromonconfirmed him to be from Nayshall lol

May I remind you that Elena practices capoeira in KENYA? 😛 A martial art is not necessarily bound to its country of origin. We already have Manon, and jūdō didn't originate in France...

Is possible that have no national/cultural hint, and they just picked it because it wink at another Capcom game (kinda like was for Balrog -> Strider)?

    I think that's the case.

You remember well. The fourth one from here:

    Copypasted from the old forum:

    1. Rejected characters presentation
We present the rejected characters who weren’t ultimately accepted in the game. A whole array of full-fledged personalities!
    2. Indian superstar
    3. Shin is an Indian fighter who also can dance and sing. He’s a super popular actor, who stars in over than 100 movies per year! His story revolves around his matches against other fighters from all around the world. His dream is to star in a movie alongside Fei Long. He’s obsessed with white clothes and socks. His fighting style is showy just like an action movie, and he uses various objects like sticks, clothes, hangers and even bikes.
    4. Malaysian woman
    5. A woman fighter from Malaysia. A tomboy who regularly bests men and loves to fight. In her past, she fought against a Malaysian tiger who exceeded 3 metres, and got huge scars in the left upper part of her body; nonetheless, she discovered the thrill and excitement to fight against a strong living being, her joy of life. She’s a survivalist who spends the majority of the year living in the forest. She fights using silat.¹
    6. A sand giant
    7. A girl who controls rocks and sand using a mysterious power who resembles Soul Power. Her name and origin are unknown, and her whole existence is shrouded in mystery. When she fights, she summons a sand giant; she then sits on its head, and moves freely in that space.² Giant’s attacks are extremely powerful, and it can throw big boulders at the opponent. When the giant sustains damage, its body quickly restores itself.
    8. Alaskan huntress
    9. WHACK WHACK
    10. A girl who lives in the Alaskan tundra, a master huntress. Despite her appearance, she possesses an inhuman strength, and is capable to freely hurl and throw even big men. A wild rumor circulating between street fighters says that BWA superstar Kimala once challenged her, and was soundly beaten. Her age is unspecified (and she herself doesn’t know for sure). She basically thinks that fighting = living = eating, and consequently fights against strong opponents, thanking the land and all the living beings. She lives with her father and 5 brothers, all hunters like her.³
    11. The fighting cuisine researcher
    12. A fighting cuisine researcher. She’s a wild lady who kills barehanded all the animals whom she then cooks. She can make her opponents faint with her strong hook. When she was a little girl, she was attacked by a giant bear, and lives to overcome the fear she felt then. She maintains a public blog about her life, and plans to publish a book by the end of the year. Contrarily to El Fuerte’s, her cooking skills are actually good.
    13. Buongiorno⁴ (the name of her team?)
    14. An Italian girl. She grew up watching anime and reading manga, and became obsessed with the (wrong) Japanese culture. Her hobby is cosplaying, and she produces all her clothes by herself. She believes she can do anything with her fighting spirit.⁵ She actually can use Soul Power; although she herself doesn’t understand well the true nature of her powers and believes that ki is the materialisation of her fighting spirit, she has been tutored by Rose. Her true name is Margherita, but it’s commonly shortened into Rita.

¹ So silat was in the cards… Just take Yayan Ruhian and put him in SF, Capcom!
² It’s not so visible in the image, but she has a cat near her. Ah, the good old Studio Ghibli influence over fighting games… One could write an entire essay about it.
³ She seems just like a young Son Goku, just with a living family around her…
⁴ Italian “Good morning”. I’ve already translated all the writings on her costume.
⁵ She sounds a lot like Italian cosplayer and talent Yuriko Tiger, very famous in Japan. Even Margherita’s incitement catchphrase sounds like hers.

  11. @bakfromon

    Damn.

I don't have the time to do all the work the guide would require. I don't even have the time to finally launch my own blog with the articles I sloooowly updated in the meantime, since practically every day there's some new info about something with the potential to change everything... just two days ago UDON's editor Matt Moylan confirmed on Twitter that Ingrid as the goddess who bestows Pandora to the fighters in the SFxT comic was HIS OWN IDEA... I was right all along, lol. Except for my conclusion that he took the idea from the plot guide, as apparently he just based it upon her English storylines.

Btw the slavic "ich" (in Croatia basically all surname ends like that lol)  at the end can still be compatible with be a russian character, not common as "ov" ending but still a thing

Interessing there was a Petrovich in imperial russian Romanov family

That's because the Russian naming convention requires a given name, a patronymic and then a surname. Anything that ends in -ič is a patronymic, NOT a surname. So we don't actually know Johann's surname, because "Petrovič" simply means "Son of Pëtr" (Pyotr). Real surnames end in -ov or -ev (or -ova and -eva for females, because Russian is a gendered and inflected language). So, basically, Johann Petrovič is... John Peterson, lol (thanks @bakfromonfor the joke).

Croatia works differently, the origin of their surnames was in their patronymics, so their -ić endings just trace back to "son of".

I see... Crap, why they can't translate things properly without changing the information?  They did the same with Dan and Rose's stories in SFV.

We thought Capcom were past "Bison's lover" Cammy translations, but nooo...

Another thing they mistranslated was "Nigeria". In the original Japanese text, it was Niger. Yep, they're close, but still not the same state (and bikinis and samba would be even MORE unlikely in the mostly-desertified Niger than in Nigeria...)

Also, funny how Luke in Japanese says that Niger is a 南国の国 Nangoku no kuni, "A southern country". That's how the Japanese refer to Southeast ASIA, lol. Everything is relative... 🤣

  14.

    This is FANTASTIC.

The first Honda winpose references the 手刀 tegatana, the hand gestures that the winner in a sumō match makes when he wins and accepts the prize for the winner from the referee. Usually there are three strokes, but some wrestlers choose to draw the character 心 kokoro "heart, spirit" in the air, as Honda does here. Also, the custom is to perform the gesture with the right hand, but some wrestlers (most notably the first Mongolian yokozuna Asashōryū, so it could be a direct reference to him) do it with the left hand.

The second winpose references the rare and spectacular instance of a 金星 kinboshi ("gold star")¹, that's to say when a maegashira wrestler (aka one of the lower-ranked wrestlers in the upper division) manages to beat a yokozuna: when such an unexpected victory happens, the audience starts to throw their 座布団 zabuton (cushions) all over the place, both to mock the losing champ and to praise the victorious underdog; although it's an action discouraged by the Japanese Sumō Association, the custom of the 座布団の舞 zabuton no mai ("the dance of cushions") persists. We can see Honda had very low health, so his loss was very likely... That's PERFECT.

You can find various examples of a kinboshi on Youtube. Below is the match between the yokozuna Harumafuji and the maegashira Shōhōzan, who unexpectedly wins against the more expert champion and even starts to cry when he realises what he managed to accomplish:

You can hear the announcer shouting 危険ですから座布団投げないでください Kiken desu kara zabuton wo nagenaide kudasai, "Please do not throw cushions around, it's dangerous", to absolutely no effect lol.

Here's Hakuhō (yokozuna) against Okinoumi (maegashira):

¹ Normally, in sumō a victory is marked with a ☆ 白星 shiroboshi ("white star") and a loss with a ★ 黒星 kuroboshi ("black star"), so a gold star marks a very special victory.
