Yea but do you actually ever need to use them or are they just there to be there? Kaizo Mario design has shown how little of an adantage Nintendo takes with Marios design despite all the things you can technically do, level design almost never asks for it.

Well yea Chad i am exaggerating a little bit here for effect. I dont actually mean 95%.

This is true, but you really dont need much space to get your P meter filled, so you can still fly over massive chunks of Mario 3s levels, and they looked at that went "Lets let them fly indefinitely!!" Getting P Baloons isnt too tough either if you know what you are doing.

I dunno, and yet people do it a lot. People find the broken and easily abused mechanic and ride it all the way to victory. You choosing not to doesnt mean thats how everyone else does it. Choosing not to abuse the mechanics doesnt mean the abuse of those mechanics has gone away. They are still there, youre just ignoring them for personal reasons and the debate was aboutt he Merit of these two franchises when compared to one another, especially after one said one fanbase ignores one series flaws to prop it up while ignoring the other franchises flaws that they are promoting. Thats really why this convo got to this point. The accusation one group ignores the flaws in the thing they like while the other doesnt when thats not true at all, both of you have literally argued "Well if i ignore that franchises flaws..." and im not gonna do that when comparing the two. On a personal level yea I can ignore the Cape or Tail if i want to and have a good time, but when objectivly comparing it to another franchise i refuse to ignore flaws in one or the other to prop up one or the other.  The Tail and the Cape as implemented are mostly a flaw and bring down Mario 3 and Worlds quality due to a lack of balance. imo.

So the question begs why is any of it there? Its never needed, most players will never even scratch half of what Mario can do in World because they are literally fluff mechanics. They dont really enrich or uplift the experience, they are just there if you want to fool with them. Like yea you can say Mario is mechanically richer but how? How do those mechanics uplift the experience? Sometimes i really wonder if some of this stuff is actually mechanics or if its just a happy accident of systems bumping into each other in interesting ways (which isnt a bad thing.) There seems to be a real lack of intention with a lot of these deeper Mario World mechanics because they arent actually utilized in the design of the game much at all. Like pretty rarely. Kaizo Designers have done a much better job pushing Marios mechanics in meaningful ways then Ninentendo has imo. Like I loved Odyssee and everything Mario can do is fucking awesome, but it also struck me many times like guys at Nintendo didnt know what to do with some of his stuff so they just shoved Moons everywhere and up everythings ass and hoped it would create situations that would take advantage of the toolset they created.

Im more then happy to have the convo but you havent really explained how Mario is better lol. You just made some vague comments about depth and thats kind of it lol. I would say Mario is better over all because the quality of the titles is really consistant across the series while Sonic is ALL over the fucking place when it comes to quality. For me the best Sonic games like Sonic 2 are better then the best Mario games like World. They have legitamte focus and design goals, incredible level design and pacing, and they give you what benefits the game instead of just a huge tool box they hope has depth and fun. No useless trashy fluff like the Kuribo Shoe in good 2D Sonic games and no over powered tools like the Cape that just snap the majority of the experience in half.

Also depends on what we are talking about too because 3D Mario>>>>>>>>3D Sonic easily but 2D out of both is a closer race.

I havent played Tropical Freeze but I was never a huge fan of the DKC series in general.

Man, Journey is still a great game.  Its still really pretty and the music is nice.  It's very simple and I can see where many people would find the game boring.  I love it though.  That feeling of isolation in a huge world.  I'm surprised that I still get co-op partners.  I kept bailing on them though cause I was trying to get the glyph things on that downhill sliding level.

I'm gonna check out Biomutant and Maneater today.  They both look fun.  I read that Maneater is a mess but I'll still give it a try.

Ibuki's stage with a nice orange and black pallette would be so killer. It's one of my favorite stages ever and would coincidentally make a great theme for Halloween.

Sure, I guess there’s that section of people. I think Stu just dislikes the series in general though. Which is whatever, I just find it surprising because even people that don’t like Sonic games are usually hard pressed to admit that a lot of the earlier games are classics.

I guess I’ve never seen those posts.

I am deeply saddened by this news. Sega has either created or at least enabled SO many dope games IMO.

Gonna pour one out on a Dreamcast for the homie Stu. Cause Sega haters gotta go unfortunately. Gonna pay @HD-Manto do some stabbin’

How so? I’ve never really heard this complaint. Personally I think there are aspects about the very first game that make it a chore, like the less intuitive level design and the lack of spin dash, but other than that I find those first three games pretty approachable still and why they remain classics to so many people.

Tight controls, bright and colorful spritework that still looks appealing (so much so that literally thousands of indie games have popped up over the last ten years mimicking styles like this), great music as always, and the sequels being an improvement upon its predecessor in pretty much every way.

This is both what made the game really cool, while also having terrible pacing issues the entire time and why I can never really recommend it as a “classic”, so to speak. The time travel mechanic was a really cool idea with a lot going for it, but it was never one of the Sonic games I took time to learn the stages for. So getting the “true” ending becomes really tiresome looking for the correct signposts and finding terrain that allowed you to pick up enough speed to actually time travel. Not to mention you’d lose access to that chance for the rest of the level if you accidentally bumped into a wall while diemension hopping lmao.

That intro though has yet to be topped. Shit absolutely SLAPS, especially back when I was a kid. Only intro that even come’s close is SA1 or Mania.

I feel Sonic CD is part of of the mainline series, it both did and didn't happen as the story revolves around time travel and time manipulation.
If you don't get all the time stones and fix the past, Robotnik does a "Thanos Snap" his Death Egg back into existence like nothing you did matters.
But if you get all the time stones, you do you own Snap, you save time and the events of CD technically never happens.

You literally said “Sonic and Sega as a whole sucks”. Like...ok fine, feel that way, it’s just shocking to hear lmao.

Oh sorry. Sonic 1-3 and S&K. I guess in my head I never really thought of CD as a mainline game but it really is...

I dunno, I think Sonic games have rightfully earned a bit of a stigma. I’ve just never agreed when people imply there haven’t been great games out of the franchise.

I mean this is probably a huge part of it. Sonic games honestly REQUIRE replay to be fun. They aren't all that fun the first time in much the same way a racing game isnt very fun the first time because you dont know the course, the car, or really the game at all. I had an NES and a Genesis as a kid and my friend had the SNES. I had the opportunity to play Sonic till i could practically do the Zones with eyes closed. It makes a huge difference.

It doesnt really tho. What it tells us (and some other lines in other posts) is that you dont stick with them long enough to learn the maps to be able to go properly fast.

And thats fine by the way. Like if thats not your bag that cool. Thats fine. Replaying stages, courses, whatever over and over and over AND OVER AND OVER isnt everyones idea of fun. A lot of people are one and doners, or only a have a couple in them, while Im on what has to be my 100th playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics because that job system just never gets boring to me.

Sonic requires time. Its not a sit down and instant gratification/reward type of game/series. Its a series that demands you play again and again and again in order to earn the right to go Sonic Boom. If you dont have time, or desire to put in...that time...then you'll probably never find these games fun because they what want from you. They where designed tall and wide so you would replay them 100s of times finding the absolute best route through the stages.

Here is a typical Mario World stage

And here is a typical Genesis Era Sonic Stage

Notice the Sonic 2 stage has mutiple routes. They want you play it over and over and mix and match the 3 levels of stage to find a route that is fastest for you. Those are the first stages of their perspective games to by the way. The MArio Stage is the one to the left of Yoshis house, and the Sonic one is Zone 1 of Emerald Hill.

It’s not even an age thing with Whalburg. It’s just nothing about his look or demeanor whatsoever says “Sully” to me. I can’t picture this guy cracking jokes on the side of an Appalachian cliff with a cigar in his mouth.
