  1. I don't see anything controversial in that statement. Of course they could have ditched classic controls, they're the developers. Would probably have been easy to convince the higher ups seeing that the game would have cost less money at the risk of only losing a tiny fraction of the potential sales. It's just a pragmatic view on the bigger picture, not necessarily how he feels personally or what is going to happen.

For me this is the same as Miyamoto coming out and saying "we could have put guns in Mario, but we didn't". They have creative freedom over their games, even though entitled consumers continuously try to challenge that notion.

Edit: I agree that the mix between Modern and Classic isn't elegant and they should probably put players in different pools online.

  2. I really don't care about Ed either but I'm at least a little interested in what they're going to do with him in this game. Not only because I think he's one of the most forgettable additions in SFV and want to see their reasoning for bringing him back, but also because he was the Modern Controls template back then. How is he going to play with Classic Controls?

Rashid seems roughly the same with a few updates here and there, a natural evolution of his SFV self. But they can't really do that with Ed IMO, there's a lot of stuff that has to be reworked for him to make sense in this game.

  3. SFIV's watchability (don't kill me) highly depended on the characters on screen for me. Fei-Long, Elena etc. were boring as hell but if you had an oddball on screen like Hakan or Seth, no matter how infuriating they might have been to play against, it was really fun to watch. Classic shoto mirrors were also really cool at high level, even though we got fewer and fewer of those as the game matured.

Lol like 1/3rd of the Manon discord is just the Laura waiting room. Really seems like a lot of people are dropping her or (like me) are looking to switch in the future.

I still like her but like I said coming from Ken or experimenting with Chun-Li it feels like a totally different game.

I think Manon is the quintessential secondary character you pick depending on matchups and if you need a break, but there's just not enough there to sink your teeth into as a singular main character. Lily is the same, so maybe that's a grappler syndrome. Gief seems a bit more nuanced, ironically, but there's really no reason to play him over the other two.

  5. Yeah, I agree, you're spending more time either using the Drive mechanics or preparing yourself to deal with them than actually playing the SF core underneath. I'm not saying that's either good or bad, but subjectively I don't like it too much and I kind of have stopped playing already mostly for this reason (will pick it up again when Aki comes out though).

In that particular case I wonder if it's really a failing of the controller as an input device.

On stick/keyboard/hitbox normal dashes are trivial, but I can see how it'd be annoying if you rely on analog stick most of the time and need to swap to the dpad.

I realise it's a very odd way to play but after trying out a couple of input methods (specifically sticks and dedicated fightpads) I've come to the conclusion that despite some shortcomings it works best for me. SF6 really is the first game I've felt it being a slight handicap.

  7. That DR cancel shortcut is welcome, because I actually don't like double tapping too much and that's pretty much all you're doing in this game, either for raw Rushes or to extend your combos.

If it's a good idea is another question, because it removes a certain input barrier almost completely. I haven't played in a bit, but I remember messing up some of the more awkward cancels in terms of timing, like going into DR from Manon's command overhead, here and there. That most likely won't happen anymore if I can just mash two buttons.

  8. Rashid is another character where I think the non-CA version of his level 3 looks better. Not a fan of the teleports in his CA, but during his normal Level 3 he just moves very quickly through a raging tornado which seems more in-character.

He looks like an absolute nightmare btw. Imagine all that stuff in a match plus having to look out for DR and DI.

I think that 1st mainstream game that introduced such clownery in their rank system was Overwatch.

It is why you have so many people thinking they are hot shit because they are Platinum, when in reality you can be in Platinum for having an SR of 49.3%

Average players being ranked as low as Gold and as far as Platinum is the epitome of giving participation trophies.

At the end of the day it's pretty much irrelevant what colour your badge is as long as the system works and matches you up with people of your skill level.

  10. Yeah, it's a very matchup-dependent strategy and toolset-strength. I'm kind of glad iDom struggled as much because I think Lily's pretty tough for Manon but everyone on the web kept saying she's bad so I was under the impression I was missing some crucial matchup info. But there's really not a lot Manon can do to either stop her from charging her Wind-Buff or dealing with powered-up Condor Spire (outside of Drive Reversal, which ultimately makes her lose the meter race).

That said, Lily has some abysmal matchups, too. I didn't play her for that long, but JP seemed like an absolute nightmare as he can both stop condor spire and prevent her from applying the buff. He's basically cutting off her arms and her feet just by existing. Outside of YOLO Condor Dive I don't know what Lily is supposed to do in that matchup.

  11. I know I'm a bit late but I watched that Problem X vs. iDom match from the Redbull thing the other day. I know people say Lily is bad and whatnot and I can see why she would be on paper, but I think that 5-0 (!) was a very good demonstration as to why on paper and in practice is sometimes a big difference. The fact that she can consistently put you into a 50:50 from full screen away without using meter is extremely powerful.

  12. Rashid looks indeed cool. The orange/black/white colour palette really pops and I like how they mix in some sand particles in his wind attacks. I didn't really know what I was looking at in the trailer most of the time because he was flipping around for basically every move, but it's a cool design and significantly better than the old one. The only thing I'm not a fan of are the crossed belts over his chest, but I guess he would have looked "empty" without it.

Not sure if I'll "waste" a rental ticket to check him out though. I think I'll wait for AKI until I boot up the game again.

  13. 25% would be a lower newcomer percentage than what we had for SFV though. Most seasons in that game had between two and three newcomers out of six total characters and outside of Season 2, which ramped it up to 5/6, I don't remember it being particularly controversial.

I also still think that four will be the number going forward for SF6. I just don't see them releasing a character with that level of detail and polish every other month. There's just not enough time in a year for that to be feasible.
