Yes sir! I haven’t actually played it yet and am not sure how well it runs, but I’ve been meaning to get into it, so we can try it this weekend or so, if you’re around.

Add me to the list of people to ping if you want to see how +R runs.

It's hopefully lightweight enough to work out for ya. +R has been fun as fuck and its got solid netcode under the hood which is nice (though at least between us we've always had solid connections in Xrd).

  2. Got some more +R time in this weekend. Goddamn that game is fun even when I'm getting mauled. So much of playing right now is just learning how to move and hit the right buttons. Both are still a work in progress but I'm getting there. +R has a similar feeling to Strive in that when I finish playing I'm mostly just excited to play again. With the obvious upside that +R is actually out. 😃

Hardest part is finding someone who is willing to play more than a game or two. Yesterday was good in that I found two people willing to play more extended sets which helps a ton when learning. Not sure if hosting a room is a better way to go, may try that next time.

I know Volt is down for +R. If anyone else is interested in playing lemme know and I can ping on here or the discord(s?) next time I get a chance to play.

I do want to keep playing BBCF as well as try +R (and keep playing Rev2). It would make more sense to play GG/anime games, but I think I can continue to play both tbh. It would be a good balance and keep me flexible as Strive will likely be some sort of a balance between all of them.

It doesn't matter much what you play, more how you play it. So long as you're focusing on your fundamentals a lot of those skills transfer between games even if it isn't a 1:1.

Like yeah SFV isn't going to help you IAD but playing Cammy is going to make you engage in the strike/throw/bait mixup game a lot, which absolutely will transfer to other games (her being a pesky little pixie even maps well to Millia).

And: you absolutely can get to Gold, and beyond if you want to. Just need to pick a path and stick with it. You'd be way past me in LP if you didn't get distracted by stupid sexy Sagat every other month and end up doing the character dance. 😉 If you ever want to practice again just gimmie a heads up and I'll dust off Poison.

@Darc_RequiemI'll happily kick my account over to the dojo if I can ever figure out how to leave the one I'm already in.

  4. Sorry @Volt the weekend didn't work out for me after all. I'll try again this weekend. It is more open so hopefully I won't get bamboozled again. I can ping you on discord if that works.

I did manage to find time later to mess around a bit more. I think I've settled on a character (HoS) and I even got a few games in. Mostly to test to make sure I didn't have any connection jank. Everything seems to have run fine which is nifty.

Playing this game against people who at least sort of know what they are doing is wild. It feels like there is so much going on its enough to just keep blocking and moving though I can definitely see how that would get better with time. Or maybe it won't and I'll just be a fumbling mess forever. 😆

Probably something to do with John Tobias talking about how characters were chosen to survive or die between MK sequels. He had a serious of tweets explaining the thought processes, along with technical limitations, that lead to their decisions.

I read this real quick and read the bolded section as "John Travolta" . And now I really want that to be true.

me neither. If XV dropped last year and had sprites instead of 3D models, I'd probably pick it up, but since Strive is dropping in a couple months, I'm going to pass.

And KOF just doesn't look good in 3D to me, at all. I dig a lot of the artwork and general designs of the characters, and I think they really benefitted from that SNK gradient heavy sprite style, but in 3D they all look like NPCs in a JPRG or something

Yeah I hear you on that. I think Capcom and SNK have both had a really rough time with the transition to 3D. ArcSys probably would have too but they straight up cheated.

KOF is actually in an especially bad spot for any kind of engine/art style shift because the game needs to have so many characters. Like you can't do the thing that most games do which is launch with a core and then build out to cut down on your workload; a "core" for KOF is like 30 characters. You definitely saw that with KOFXIV and while they did polish that game's visuals up there was only so much they could do with the base models and such.

EDIT: Actually we've already seen a really keen example of this with KOFXII. My understanding of that game is that it was basically just an engine transition game which eventually got us to XIII.

I think with some more iteration you could probably get a pretty slick looking KOF game in this engine. I think XV is a marked improvement already, though to your point the art style has fundamentally shifted in a way that maybe isn't the most endearing.

Old man yelling at cloud moment: the thing that drew me in to all these games back in the day was how fucking sick they always looked. There was a quality to the sprite work that feels totally lost in this modern era (ArcSys again mostly avoids that with their tech). Some of the better models in SFV kinda sorta get there but then they go all dead-eyed or have some awkward facet and it pulls me right out.

  7. Tubb's point is important for anyone who hasn't played KOF before. Its not a team game in the same sense that Capcom fans are used it.

Its more like each player has 3 lifebars and you're picking how you want each of those lifebars to play. Also gets interesting because it has some meta consideration to it. I'm not the biggest KOF fan but I'll definitely give this new one a spin if the netcode is solid.

Also congrats to @Vhozite on the job offer. Fuckin' awesome when that happens. Sometimes just going into an interview and being real pays off. If you had gone in there and tried to bullshit them you probably would have gone right into the reject pile.

Yeah, i think so as well. I had to relocate my console though and now i’m in a spot with wifi only.

Now you're perfectly configured for the SFV Online experience. 🙃

Its really cool to see so much positive energy around Rose. Nothing worse than finally getting your character and they are butt. Looking forward to seeing matches with her in the future. Also seeing more Akira.

  9. Pretty cool news. As expected its just tweaks to the lobbies but anything would be an improvement over what was there last time. A rematch option alone will be a huge quality of life improvement.

Also was interesting to see that they're addressing jump-ins and AAs. Looking forward to seeing what the next version of the game plays like.

I managed to fire up +R for a bit recently.  Took me some time to just get it configured but after realizing that some of the buttons didn't map I was in business. Need to find time to get back to it. Though with how much schedule luck I've been having by the time I free up again Strive will be out.
