Most fighting games wish they had a community like that.

Having a large community that is made up mostly of scrubs who don't play anything else means you've got a healthy game that attracts all sorts of players, and not just hardcore FGC people.

Smash is another good example of this.  It's a MASSIVE game with a huge player base has no idea what they're talking about most of the time.  They also think joystick motions are the devil and refuse to play any other fighting game.  I've legit seen Smash players complaining that people who do combos are THE WORST.

I hope other fighting games eventually reach this level of scrubbery as well because it means the player base is healthy.  Hopefully some of those people will eventually evolve into competitive players and keep the more hardcore part of the scene alive.

People shit on Call of Duty but the number of clueless people that play it just shows just how big Call of Duty is.

Also, fuck you.  I love COD.  🔫

You don't seem to understand what I am saying.  They aren't changing characters' faces because they feel like it, or to piss people off.  They simply design the characters in a way that match whatever game they are working on.  It is 100% dependent on the style of the game.

Here are different versions of Ryu from recent games:

He has a different face shape in every game, but nobody is confused about who it is.  It's clearly Ryu. Changing his face shape did not make him unidentifiable.  Giving all of these versions the same jawline would not serve any purpose.

Not only does he have a different face shape, but he's rendered using different lighting styles, his muscles are modeled differently, and his clothes have different levels of wear/different textures.  In some games they want him to look younger.  In some games they want him to look older.  In some games they want him to look angrier.  All of these are choices made to fit the game that he is being added to.  Changing his face to match artistic goals is a good thing.

Art direction is making the characters fit the game you are making.  It's not about copy-pasting the same face over and over just to be consistent.

Giving Ryu the same exact face in every game isn't solving anything.  Instead of creating a version of Ryu that best matches the style/mood of the game, you would rather have them make him look the same every time.  That isn't helpful at all.

Some people do not like Smash Ryu.  Some people do not like SF4 Ryu.  Some people do not like SF5 Ryu.  Giving him the same face in every game will not make these people happy.  They are upset because they don't like certain versions of the character, not because it's inconsistent.  What if every Ryu had SF4 face?  It would be consistent, but people who don't like SF4 art would be unhappy forever.

Fans don't want 'consistency'.  They're just mad because the Ryu THEY like isn't being used over and over. A super strict style guide will not fix this, because different fans like different versions of the character anyway.

SF doesn't need some kind of super-strict face guide.  Different games will interpret Ryu differently, and that's ok.  People will come up with different versions of the character, and that's cool.  Blindly following some arbitrary rule forever isn't going to make the games better visually -- it will just make them incredibly boring.

And here are some 2D examples -- Alpha vs SF2:

In Alpha he is younger, so they gave him a rounder face.  In SF2 they wanted the chars to have more extreme features, so his face is angular and long.  This is an example of different face shapes being used to create a different feel for a game.  Despite what you say, the principles are the same regardless if you are doing 2D or 3D.  3D doesn't make face shape matter more or less than it did before.

If you are digital only and living with bad internet or bandwidth caps then size concerns make sense to me.

On the other hand if we're talking about the Switch specifically then the biggest game is something like 30GB, and 256GB+ SD cards are both cheap and plentiful.

Switch doesn't run at a high resolution so large textures and assets aren't necessary. Super Mario World being 2.9GB doesn't seem like something someone would need to write an article about when it seems like lots of games on the platform are small anyway: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/nintendo_switch_game_file_sizes?start=80

Honestly I'm more concerned about the Switch's lackluster internal storage size rather than the size of games themselves.  32GB seems like a pretty embarrassing amount of storage for a device made in 2017.  If the Switch had shipped with something more appropriate like 128GB/256GB, I don't think anyone would be writing about game sizes on the platform at all.

Anyway it's just an observation.  I had fun with my Switch the few times I used it.  I'll crack open my copy of Ring Fit Adventure eventually...

I'm just saying I don't know if I'd call it 'compression wizardry'.  Games that don't have a lot of data are gonna be small no matter what.

The whole modern emphasis on install sizes in general seems a bit odd to me to begin with tbh.  People posting entire articles about how much space a game or application takes up seems very 1990s to me. 🤷‍♂️

It wasn't popular because it barely ran.

The port is a technological marvel because it runs at all on such limited hardware -- but it's so cut back and runs so slowly that it's not worth playing.  Code was probably never discovered because nobody cared about that version of the game in the first place. 🤣

In the old days most codes were not discovered by players.  Developers would tell them to gaming publications, and people would find out about them through magazines and guides.

misterBee got a reaction from Disciple0fAnrky in Melty Blood: Please play it
This is the Melty Blood thread.

Melty Blood is currently my favorite fighting game.  I will play it with you.  I will teach it to you.  I will give you the game.  My desperation knows no bounds.

    Why this game is cool:
Alpha  3/CVS2-style groove system Rollback netcode* Super fast paced, free-form combo system Characters to fit almost any playstyle Large player base Low system requirements (will run on basically any PC) Beautiful 2D animation (even if it's a little low-res) *only available with the community-created edition.  This is the version everyone else uses.  Nobody uses or likes the Steam version.  Ask me for details on how to get it.

    Basic Overview

Melty is a fast-paced game that offers players a lot of flexibility.  The 3 different grooves change how you play pretty drastically -- it's like Alpha 3/CVS2 on steroids.  Some grooves are technical and allow you to have precise control over your meter, while others basically handle it for you.  Some grooves allow reverse beat (chaining light normals after heavy ones), and others are Guilty Gear/Blazblue-style (you can only chain light moves into heavier ones).  Automatic shield counters, spot dodges, just defends -- pick the right groove and Melty will let you play the way you want to.

Different versions of a character will play completely different from one another.  Each groove grants characters completely different move sets, abilities, and mechanics. This means that there are essentially 93 characters in the game (31 characters x 3 versions).  There's something for almost everybody.

If you're an execution monster looking to do some sick loops, there are some characters that will really challenge you -- but most characters are not hard to pick up and learn.  A lot of  characters have pretty simple combos that work well even at a high level.

Thanks to the game's low system requirements and community edition's excellent netcode, this game has a healthy scene.  Unlike a lot of other old games, this one still has lots of new and inexperienced players.

If you're looking for games/want to learn just hit me up or post in here.  I'll teach you the basics and help get you started with the game!

Find high level match vids for any character.  People in Japan still play this game a lot and new matches are being added to the database constantly.  Haven't seen any comparable tool for any other scene/game.  This thing is amazing.
