This is pretty much what I was trying to say.
Story mode is cool and all but if they're expecting people to pay 60 (soon to be 70) dollarsn they're going to have to make fighting games jam packed. Mini games, challenges, limited time events everything you see in other live service games.
 
To be honest vanilla sfv should have been f2p.
 

The debate over story modes isn't one. NRS games curb stomp the competition sales and its not due to an appeal to the hardcore market. Given the tournament participation, it's obvious what most of the people buying the games purchase them for. What the hardcore FGC needs to realize is that casuals fund their games. Those modes keep the proverbial lights on.  Just do what the bulk FPS players do and ignore single player content. Go straight into multiplayer.

I also liked the time traveling in MK11. Who cares if it is overused in fiction? This is fighting games. You know what's an overused plot in fighting games? Tournaments.

I like plots that are different like Darkstalkers', PA4's or Blazblue's.
 

When people say MK story modes are "good", I don't really think they're saying it's shakspearean level writing. It's just entertaining as fuck. 
 
Dont tell me Johnny Cage slapping the shit out of his younger self isn't great. That sentence alone should let you know what level of writing you're dealing with. 

MK11 story wasn't bad...I really like time travel and multiverses so the plot they've been doing for the past 3 games has been pretty fun.  I actually watched all the modern MK stories on YouTube and it was like watching a movie trilogy.  Injustice 1 and 2 had cool stories too, and I even read all the comics.  Netherrealm stuff is definitely an exception to the rule.
 
I'd agree with you that most fighting game stories suck.  Blazblue and Guilty Gear are damn near incomprehensible.  I watch a ton of anime and still don't have the patience for ArcSys stories.  
 
I also don't think SF is ever gonna have a good plot.  It's just not a priority.  KOF is busy trying to survive, so plot isn't something they're worried about either.  Tekken also doesn't have much going on plot-wise.
 
I think by now we're just gonna have to accept that a tiny bits of world-building here and there is all most fighting game 'stories' are ever going to amount to.  It's gonna be like flavor text in Bloodborne but 1000 times less interesting.

This is why, as soon as my future children are old enough (8 or 9 I think) I'm gonna wake them up on Saturday by challenging them to battle, Hot Rod style.

That's a good point, I didn't compare win/loss ratios. I think that might be better than last season's. Here's to hoping that they do away with the KL season system and just implement one general ranking.
