I play a lot of different games.  I have sunk many many hours into Xrd, Blazblue, and Tekken.  I also play a ton of KOF.

If SF suddenly had air-dashes I wouldn't mind at all.  I'm not obsessed with all the games I play having some kind of conceptual 'purity' like some people seem to.

SF3 had an almost completely different cast of characters from any SF that came before it.  Parries change the way you play the game so radically that it has almost nothing in common with any other SF game, because core SF mechanics like fireballs don't even matter.  Despite this some people think 3S is the best SF ever created.

...but when New Generation first came out everyone hated on it because it wasn't similar enough to what they once knew.  "Who are all these weird characters?  Where's Chun-Li?  This isn't Street Fighter!" they would say.  James Chen still thinks it's not Street Fighter because of parries -- and who is taking him seriously when he says that?

We would never have gotten to the beauty of Third Strike if all the hardcore 'fans' had had their way.

I don't know how you think the characters don't look similar enough for you.  Eddy looks 100% like Eddy.  Nobody is gonna be confused about which characters are Sol or Ky.  May is unmistakably May.  Adding muscle mass and changing up costumes doesn't suddenly make those characters unrecognizable. Chip's outfit has barely changed from original Guilty Gear all the way to Strive.  Adding a rope to his belt and making him buff doesn't suddenly make him nothing like before.  Xrd Milia has an outfit completely different from older Milia and I don't think anybody was confused about who that character was when the game came out.

The real problem isn't that Strive has changed too much.  The problem for some people is that they have invested tons of time and have enjoyed one specific set of games for years, and don't like it when the new thing isn't the same.  It feels like the game they love is being taken away.  There are old GG players out there right now bitching about Xrd and I don't think anybody is taking them seriously anymore.  Strive as you say may be quite good, and nobody will care about how different it is from Xrd.  Then one day when Strive gets replaced the Strive players will claim that the new game isn't GG either, because to them GG is a game like Strive.  It's just a cycle of complaining tied to peoples' dislike of change /their nostalgia.

There is no hard and fast rule of what GG is.  To some people it's just an anime game with a hard rock soundtrack.  For others it's all about the chain canceling normals and Roman cancels.  Some people care more about the technical aspects of the gameplay and some care more about the aesthetics.  GG is a lot of different things to different people, and Strive is closer to the mark for some than others.  Hell, Isuka is a 4 player game that forces you to push a button just to turn around -- and that's still a Guilty Gear game, isn't it?

I have spent many hours playing Xrd.  I played it in arcades in Japan and love the game a lot.  I own it on three different platforms and bought it on launch.  Before that as a kid I spent a lot of time dicking around in PC versions of XX.  I have zero problems with Strive and think it's a really cool-looking GG game.  I can't wait to play it. Are my opinions and time spent playing GG wrong?  Is Strive for me because I don't like GG?  No, I like GG a whole fucking lot, and from where I'm standing Strive is another GG game, just with new/different mechanics.

Am I somehow not a GG fan?  Or is my fan opinion somehow inferior to yours?  Trying to gatekeep who Strive is 'for' based on some silly idea of who is/isn't a GG fan is pretentious as hell.

You're standing over there saying THIS ISN'T GG and I'm standing here saying it is.  You can see how this is a futile point to try to make because it's just peoples' opinions, and those differ wildly, even among 'fans'.

If the game is good then who cares if it has GG in the title or not?   You worry that Strive will kill the franchise but if it's a good game then it'll HELP the franchise, regardless of how similar it is to old titles or not.  You're not afraid the franchise will die.  You're just afraid the specific type of gameplay YOU LIKE will die.  Guilty Gear itself will probably do just fine.

Strive's graphics ALONE will probably pull in more casual player $$$ than any similarity to older games ever will.

That presentation was the most GG thing I've seen in a long time.

Not having the exact same gameplay mechanics as a previous game doesn't mean it's not GG.  Xrd got weird backlash like this too when it first came out and now in 2020 I don't think there's anyone complaining it's 'not GG'.

People have to realize that there's no point in making the same game over and over.  This game is hella GG, it's just different.  Some people will like the changes and some won't, but it's still definitely a GG game.

Creating the same exact game but with graphical improvements would be the most creatively bankrupt thing ArcSys could do.  In fact that's why people hate on sports games so much -- because they do the same thing over and over with a fresh coat of paint.  Strangely, that seems to be what every fighting game player always seems to want.  🤷‍♂️

I recall both the V3 and the EX2 required you to file off button hole tabs, but it's not a terribly big deal.  It's worth it for that small form factor.  EX2 is great because it's small but it still has a metal bottom plate for extra weight.  For the V3 and Tekken 6 sticks I add rolls of pennies in there for weight.

    I miss my old EX2:

I live in New York and have gigabit fiber.  Both my PC and PS4 use wired ethernet connections.  Despite the fact that many players are nearby and my connection is flawless I had lag problems in SFV on console and PC.  When I lived in Hong Kong I had similar issues, despite having a great connection there also.

Other games, even ones without rollback sometimes perform better than SFV does in terms of online play.  The game just doesn't work as well as it should online.

so much gaming today... I got back into Borderlands 3 and got up to level 20 something.... still playing Zane with the digi-clone and sentinel action skills.

Meanwhile in Kingdoms of Amalur.... the adventures of the mysterious "Zuul" continue on.  Now at level 17 he had ascended to "Sage" status on the path of pure sorcery.

heh, there was one quest where a guy is burdened with this cursed amulet; I agreed to take it and he was relieved....and then I promptly murdered him after that.  He was no longer of any use. 🤣  He's in an area by himself so with there being no witnesses so I got away with it.  I have blacksmithing skill fully leveled up now, so once I find the better components I can craft that godly "mastercrafted" stuff.

after watching the gg stream vod, some thoughts

    - giovanna is cool her theme is ass
    - thank god everyone complained about the ui and character select screen because its a lot better now
    - that said, burst bar is too big and risc bar is too small, I dont understand why they keep making one of the most important bars the hardest to see
    - leo looks very much like his xrd self, I dont think hes missing a single move and he even has several new ones, tomo looked at home
    - some change I cant quantify to ky's shock state, gives you a yellow static glow now
    - millia also retained a lot. she has 214p, fastfall, bad moon which is still fast as shit and still an overhead, 6k, discs still look cheap...loss of pin seems to hurt a lot, dogura was struggling to get in on takehara. remains to be seen how helpful her air flower move is in that regard
-ramlethal changed a lot, much more changed than leo/millia. set swords seem to come back on their own with maybe delayable timing and I dont think did anything when set? she looks more focused on space control than hard setplay like before. her pressure seems to come from swords giving her plus frames. very different character but honestly im ok with it because xrd ram wasnt exactly a great design gameplay wise imo
    - why are people calling nagoriyuki boring? this character looks fun lol. he has no airdash and no ground dash, just fuckhuge normals and commited movement specials. it seems easy to throw him out of them or mash but I suppose thats what the shadow clone dashes are for. I didnt understand his blood meter very well, he seems to gain a lot from his special dash and from making you block, but loses a lot while hitting you. very interested to learn more about how he works
-faust got a command grab super lol. his new trumpet toss looks like a mixed bag for him though, its a good call to get but it can be picked up by the opponent...
    - in the faust v nagoriyuki set, it seems like go1 killed in one round with chip damage which is nice to know thats still in the game
    - nagoriyuki shows his true vampire colors with his lose pose lol

all in all I am quite pleased with what they showed. theyll get a money transfer...even without answer

Can't we just all agree that Strive will be GG as long as this still applies.
