People should stop paying for Premium. I never have, and once the ads got annoying enough I just dropped the entire service. YouTube thinks they gonna win me by blocking ad block? Nope bitches I'll just stop using YouTube. Dont need you.

People need to stop taking it up the ass from these corpo fucks at every turn. It's getting embarrassing.

Or start using 3rd party clients like Invidious or NewPipe that get you around the ads

Really wish that certain people would stop trying to sugarcoat history and just let it be presented as is, good and bad.  Things have nuance yes but saying "Hey this marginalized group survived their circumstance by earning skills and thats a good thing right?" is not the angle anyone should be approaching those subjects since it gives a window for defenders of heinous shit.

It also makes it seem like they couldn't have learned those skills otherwise which isn't true either. Slavery did them 0 favors, it's disingenuous as fuck to try and paint it like they got the benefit of skills they wouldn't have otherwise. It also underhandedly pats slave owners on the back for teaching the slaves skills they could have learned anywhere.

Like if your an abusive parent you don't get points for also teaching your kids math.

This also applies to the Holocaust which is why I worded it the way I did.  "Some Jewish people survived by using skills and making themselves useful so thats good right?"  Its such a crazy angle to come at that.

Sure but the idea that a group is above criticism because those people have been through a horrible world event, which is often never exclusive to that group, is also a crazy angle. I think the way slavery and the holocaust are used is part of why stupid reactions, like what DeSantis is doing, happen.

I'm not sure where its said that 'marginalized group is above criticism" is coming from because that's not what I'm saying or even know what that has to do with this.  (For the record, no group is above criticism).  Where was it mentioned that during the case of stuff going on with Florida's public schools and the above conversation dealing with the Holocaust where this was mentioned?

I'm not saying that you said any groups were above criticism, but you brought up the holocaust which has been used as justification for everything from deflecting any criticism of Jews in general to Israeli policy that has essentially turned the country into an apartheid state, when neither of those things often have anything to do with the holocaust. Slavery has been weaponized in similar ways in that groups of various races and classes have vested social and financial interests in history being read a certain way.

So while I agree with you that history should be taught "as is," shitting on DeSantis for what he's doing (rightfully so I might add) and making it seem like if it weren't for guys like him we wouldn't have any arguments over how history truly shook out it is ignoring the context of how the events in question have been used by other folks for their own benefit. The 1619 project is a case in point.

Her son's death must have been pretty hard on her. Some even look back at her infamous "ripping the Pope's picture" and see her as someone who was ahead of her time in denouncing the atrocities committed by the Catholic church

RIP Sinead

Does anyone know of a good computer desk that's big and sturdy enough for one of those dual monitor mounts with arms (search Huanuo to see what I'm talking about)? Budget is 200-500.

Are you looking to buy or build?

I have to reconfigure the space in my loft area as an office. I plan to build a unit by the end of the year. My job gives me 12 weeks of parental leave. That's enough time to draw something in concept.

There's no such thing as a computer desk.

Buy whatever damn desk you please.  🙂

I just use a standard one from IKEA.

This.

Even if you found something that may not be a "computer desk," you can add a few things with cable routing and make it into what you need it to be.

RIP Sinead

This is incredibly sad.

I remember when she tore up the picture of the pope and how much shit she got for that, but much like how Prince got a lot of shit for things he did in the context of his battle with Warner (like writing "slave" on his face and refusing to sing at certain functions despite being onstage) I think if people knew the full context of what her reasoning was for doing that (that she'd been sexually abused herself) people would have cut her more slack and it might have led the church to being investigated a lot earlier.

Either way RIP, she had a one of the kind voice and deserved more happiness than she got.

I've never really read 1619 project.  I just know that anytime I see someone bring up CRT that it's one of the things that gets brought up.  I'll probably end up reading it just to see what the fuss is about.

I can't say what the schools are doing is right at all in FL so this is probably an agree to disagree point here since I stand by what I said earlier.  I don't think some who potentially could use those incidents to absolve themselves of criticism doesn't take away from the fact that what occurred was horrible and trying to backwards positive spin on it, isn't the way to go.

One of the hottest aliens that always pops up in mind is Mantis in the MCU from recent years.  Gomorra is nice but Mantis is the top rank pick for me.

and speaking of ol' mcu--- this appears to be one of those times I actually agree with John on something...I haven't watched the show but from what he's describing; yeah this sounds completely ridiculous, even though sometimes i do enjoy absurdly overpowered characters....

*big-time SPOILERS for Secret Invasion in here, obviously....

How do you know his criticisms are valid if you haven't seen the show?

Based on John's description, it just sounds like something else that is a silly decision...which isn't surprising to me considering the current state of the Marvel shows and movies.  I'm wondering how would you even be able to defeat such a thing at this point that appears to be far beyond anything else that has been shown so far.  Captain Marvel powers + any other heavy hitter on that list is already pretty insane.  Haven't you heard someone's opinion on a show (good or bad) that sounds reasonable, based on what they describe, even if you have not seen it yourself yet?  It's also a bit unusual considering he tends to skew positive more often than not....like he's reluctant to straight up say something sucked.

It reminds me of something a certain old friend would write for his characters... and why any kind of ttrpg with the guy would've been an awful idea. (e.g.---well this character I designed is immortal, invincible, stronger than Hulk and has regeneration, multiplicity powers, phasing stronger than all Gods, he can time travel and he's super smart, and like Doomsday even if you kill him he resurrects, then he can alter reality, etc.  Basically he would design his characters so it's impossible for them to ever lose to anything.  Heh, that guy was somethin' else. )

But comic books are inherently silly.

You watch Bleach bro.....

And I mean sure i watch reviews to get an opinion and such, but that's all I use them for, I don't use reviews for confirmation bias. Not really sure whats so much goofier and sillier about this current phase then any of the previous phases. Same with quality, the first 10 years of MCU was pretty hit and miss. Some movies where dope and some where Iron Man 3 and Thor Dark World.

Its like those movies are so bad everyone forgot they existed or something. Hell Iron Man 2 as well, shit villain, and the whole movie stops for 20 minutes to pimp The Avengers.

That's the whole point people watch these talking heads on tv or youtube--- people enjoy or find their opinions on various things entertaining or at least interesting before actually seeing the thing for themselves.  And yeah---sometimes I enjoy the stupidly overpowered characters, like what we often see in most anime... but sometimes it just doesn't work for me.  I'm mostly checked out on MCU anyway at this point, though I still watch John's show sometimes (though I'm inclined to disagree with him on some things)

Oh yeah I wasn't much into the Iron Man movies since that character (blasphemous hot take incoming) was never all that interesting/cool to me... he's just a smart dude in a highly-advanced suit.  The real deal stuff for me was Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame, tbh.

I really do hope that everyone who was planning to get out during the transition period of the Taliban taking over got out while they could.  IIRC Taliban was trying to convince people to stay and that they had changed or some nonsense like that.  It was like the wolf with blood all of its face telling the sheep that they had nothing to fear.

Gas appliances probably should fuck off into the history books, even though gas stoves are almost always objectively better.  Just have to do it by phasing them out gradually, rather than making people buy expensive new shit way ahead of normal replacement schedule.

Body count discourse misses the whole point, and I feel like it's mostly driven by super insecure dudes.  What you want is a woman who has her shit together and is also enthusiastically interested in sex.  If a woman has a high body count and still managed to remain kid and disease free, guess what?

If anything it'll just shift the consumption of the gas from the people using the stoves to the power plants that will power the electric ones that will replace them. Electricity doesn't just come out of thin air (well most of the time anyway lol) and the additional load on power plants will have to be mitigated somehow (probably with fossil fuels.)

Most of these "green" solutions aren't actually solutions, they're band aids that just delay the inevitable, shift the blame to everyday people who are a nominal part of the problem, and keep the ACTUAL biggest polluters (corporations, governments, militaries, and some farmers) from being accountable.
