LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Arkansas on Tuesday ordered the subsidiary of a Chinese-owned company to divest itself of 160 acres (774,400 square yards) of agricultural land, the first such action under a wave of new laws across the country restricting foreign ownership of farmland.

 

Attorney General Tim Griffin said Northrup King Seed Co. has two years to divest the property in Craighead County under legislation passed by the majority-Republican Legislature and signed by GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders earlier this year.

Northrup is a subsidiary of Syngenta Seeds, which is owned by China National Chemical Company, or ChemChina, a Chinese state-owned company.

 

“We will make sure that every company operating in Arkansas is a friend to Arkansas and good to hard-working Arkansans,” Sanders at a news conference with Griffin to announce the move.

 

Syngenta said it was disappointed in the state's decision about its land, which the company has owned since 1988. The company said no one from China has ever directed its executives to buy, lease or otherwise engage in land acquisition.

 

“Our people in Arkansas are Americans led by Americans who care deeply about serving Arkansas farmers. This action hurts Arkansas farmers more than anyone else," the company said.

 

Concern has been growing in many states about foreign ownership of farmland. Prior to this year, 14 states had laws prohibiting or restricting foreign ownership and investments in private farmland. But that ballooned to 24 states this year as lawmakers in nearly three-quarters of states considered legislation on the topic, according to The National Agriculture Law Center at the University of Arkansas.

 

The enforcement action by Arkansas’ attorney general is the first under the wave of new laws, many of which specifically targeted investments from China, Iran, North Korea and Russia, said Micah Brown, a staff attorney at the agricultural law center.

“Historically, states that had a law before this year, there wasn’t much enforcement,” said Micah Brown, a staff attorney at the agricultural law center.

 

Under the Arkansas law, if a company doesn’t divest of the land, the state can take action in court. Griffin did not say whether the state has identified other foreign-owned land that would prompt similar action under the new law.

 

The state also fined Syngenta $280,000 for not reporting its foreign ownership under a 2021 state law, which gives the company 30 days to pay the fine. Syngenta said Tuesday the company updated its filing with the U.S. Department of Agriculture after an internal review reflecting the change in ownership, and has also filed a copy with the state.

 

Griffin said he had “full confidence” the company would divest itself of the property and pay the fine, but declined to say whether he has had any conversations with Syngenta.

 

The surge in state laws targeting land ownership by certain foreigners represents a “a political flashpoint” that Brown says stems from some highly publicized cases of Chinese-connected entities purchasing land near military bases in North Dakota and Texas. The trek of a suspected Chinese spy balloon across the U.S. in February also spurred interest in restrictions in some states.

I guess if you bought enough of another country's production capacity, you could use it to manipulate the markets to favor you.

 

But real estate seems like a particularly bad way to do that, because of how easily it can just be taken away again.

 

Though I bet in this case if someone ever did any forensic accounting it would turn out that Chinese ownership was just used as a pretext to give the land to a friend or campaign donor.

That's how it works though. It used to be "You hate someone because of their skin color/origins, you must be a racist." Now it's, "You deigned to breathe in the same space as a POC thereby depriving them of oxygen, you must be racist." The continual shifting of the definition of the word "racism" benefits people like the grifters in this video because it turns every situation into a he said/she said, but it muddies the waters for everyone else and creates distrust.

 

A lot of these microaggression types of "offenses" aren't provably racist and are simply up for interpretation because "It FEELS true" and that's a problem especially considering the damage even being accused of racism can do and that there are places putting hate speech laws into place that can even land you in jail.

 

The "offense" committed by the woman in the video really WAS nothing, you're right. If you have to look that hard to find an offense, then the offense is more than likely being trumped up. But it's what those women paid for, to be told they were shitty and racist even if they weren't. So she was getting what she paid for.

@Sonero you were right about Encanto. It might be the best Disney movie, definitely gives Moana a run for its money and I fucking love Moana. Encanto is my daughter's new favorite so I've had a lot of time to watch it over and over. At first I was overwhelmed by the amount of characters, but after multiple viewings it's at least tied for the top spot. Music is incredible in it. We saw Disney on Ice and it featured Encanto and it was definitely the favorite over Frozen.

 

Also,  Delores is the most fuckable Disney character since Jasmine.

youtube's adblock bs is eally annoying. in hindsight i guess using chrome browser and the chrome adblock extensions was a mistake. i dont mind ads.

as long as it doesnt get obnoxious but they are.

thankfully it doesnt seem to have anything to do with youtube music website where all my like music vids are listed.

im mp3 recoding all my fav music vids right now.

cuz as long as there arent ads between music vids.

i'll figure something out.

i just wish yt had implemented this shit later rather than sooner cuz i wanted to record some vids before all this kicked in.

Re Omni vs. Homelander: Homelander wouldn’t even be able to lay a finger on Omniman. Most of Homelanders feats are just publication fluff by vought. Omniman’s isnt. He’s an intergalactic presence. Homelander just vibes in a penthouse in New York in-between pressers. 
 

i could rant about this a lot. As I hate death match stuff that doesn’t make sense on paper (and i just hate the concept in general) As well as Homelander is arguably the weakest of any ‘what if Superman was evil’ trope characters every created
 

While not only does Omniman not fit that trope but he’s arguably the strongest Viltrumite (who are basically super saiyan krypotions) in the world of invincible. The only people that could argue that title is Mark/Invincible and Thragg.

Wanna support content creators, truly? Get YT Prem. Even that doesn't do shit. YTuber's best revenue is landing sponsorships. Use AdBlock because it fucks YouTube, not creators. People who don't have a great understanding of the system are ad apologists.

at first yt produces the pop up that tells u to stop using it.

then after a while it shows another pop up that has a 3 strikes counter. i reached 2 strikes warning and had to turn off my adblock.

for now....till i figure out how to solve it without having to switch browser from chrome to something else.

btw idk what happens if you reach 3 strikes for using adblocks.

i think tempoary banning from what i heard. i doubt perma ban.

er...

worst thing is remembering to turn on adblockers and pop up blockers back on before going to porn sites. their damn pop ups have malware written all over em. damn.

I had to look up what Arendelle is based off of and it's based of Norwegian towns and cities....thare isn't a lot of us in those areas so we don't really "need" representation in that area.  Maybe like...1 or 2 darker skinned people in the background maybe and that's about it.  Saying it's racist is on pretty much the same dumb level as those people who upon seeing the name Black Panther go "WHAT IF THERE WAS A WHITE PANTHER!?"

Homelander is only powerful in his own show where most ppl arent strong enough to stop him, you put him in Invincible, and he won't last long, especially with how mentally weak he is. Omniman gone break his confidence and wash him with ease. Invincible probably would beat him as well you could argue

I just came back home after hanging out with some of my highschool friends who I haven't seen in over 6 years.
