I do believe that language matters. The entire premise of the movie "Arrival" is that language can do more than describe reality, it can create it.

I'm not a PC nazi, but just try it with yourself. The way you talk to yourself, change the structure of the sentences and your choice of words, and everything in your life will follow.

Ancient Egyptians are the first human civilization to document the power of the word. "Incantations" for spells or the repeating/reciting of scripture in the religions that followed, all stem from this original idea that what we said changes our world. Even when you divorce the supernatural aspect of this idea from it, words still hold immense sway on the individual.

Having said this many of those updates to the Stanford Language are a little too "kid gloves" for me (Spirit animal? Transsexual? Seminal? really? fuck off!), but I understand why they are doing it. They are taking it a bit too far in the sterile direction.

I had an ex that I could say something that conveyed the exact same message two different ways and she would take it completely different depending on how I said it. The "how you say it vs. what you say" thing is absolutely true.

But with that said, these folks always shoot themselves in the foot by taking it too far, like that Carlin bit about being okay with calling people "humankind" vs "mankind" but how ridiculous it was that they wanted people to call it a "person hole."

Apparently this was just a suggestion guide and even with it being 2 years old, Stanford issues this statement just a couple days ago:

Update on Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative in Stanford’s IT Community

Tuesday, December 20, 2022

Over the last couple of days, there has been much discussion of a website that provides advice for the IT community at Stanford about word choices in Stanford websites and code. This message seeks to provide clarification about some of the issues discussed.

First and importantly, the website does not represent university policy. It also does not represent mandates or requirements. The website was created by, and intended for discussion within, the IT community at Stanford. It provides “suggested alternatives” for various terms, and reasons why those terms could be problematic in certain uses. Its aspiration, and the reason for its development, is to support an inclusive community.

We have particularly heard concerns about the guide’s treatment of the term “American.” We understand and appreciate those concerns. To be very clear, not only is the use of the term “American” not banned at Stanford, it is absolutely welcomed. The intent of this particular entry on the EHLI website was to provide perspective on how the term may be imprecise in some specific uses, and to show that in some cases the alternate term “US citizen” may be more precise and appropriate. But, we clearly missed the mark in this presentation.

This guide for the university’s IT community is undergoing continual review. The spirit behind it, from the beginning, has been to be responsive to feedback and to consider adjustments based on that feedback. We value the input we have been hearing, from a variety of perspectives, and will be reviewing it thoroughly and making adjustments to the guide.

Sincerely,

Steve Gallagher
Chief Information Officer
Stanford University

It's been interesting to continue checking back on Lainey's follower count since it just keeps going...she's up to 535k now.

back to the 80s for a second---from Ghostbusters....the hotness there to me was Annie Potts as their secretary.  I would later be a bit disappointed that the stereotypical New Yorker sound is not her natural accent, as we'd later see in interviews and when she was on "Designing Women"...and yeah I watched that show simply because she was on it.

90s Hotness---besides the 2 legends Halle and Salma we had several others---Tyra Banks, Topanga (Danielle Fischel) from Boy Meets World, Natalie Imbruglia from the late 90s, Lisa Loeb, the ladies of En Vogue and TLC, Jennifer Lopez, Marissa Tomei was becoming more popular (*though she could fit in the 80s category; Different World debuted in 87), Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime Pressly, Lisa Marie Presley, Toni Braxton, Aaliyah.  In 1992 we'd get the hottest Catwoman ever imo (from way back I'd consider Julie Newmar right behind her in rank)---Michelle Pfeiffer.  There was Beverly Hills 90210 with Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty...and later on a lot more hotties....then Melrose Place came out with an even better lineup of fine ass.  X-Files came out with the latest fine ass redhead on tv in Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully.

...it was also the mid-90s when I randomly found Eva LaRue playing "Maria Santos Grey" on All My Children... still remember that shit like it was yesterday...it was a day off from school for some reason and I was channel-surfing... stopped short on ABC when I noticed this UNBELIEVABLE hotness on screen suddenly...another "godDAMN who is THAT?!" The show instantly became something I had to see regularly because she was just that damn gorgeous.  Later she went on to be on CSI: Miami, so more people probably remember her from that.

I had to look it up to see if this was a real thing...and it is.

Apparently this is just a concept store that is staffed by real people just not in any order taking capacity.

But fully (or mostly) automated fast food places are going to be a thing, it's just a matter of when and it would have happened regardless of the $25/hour thing. But that probably just sped up the time frame.

Honestly I would rather eat automated fast food if I had the choice because of how clean it would probably be in the kitchen.

An incident that began with 2 dissatisfied stans of Ana de Armas has now become a major win in federal court — and one that could set a major precedent for film studios moving forward.

The biggest implication that this will have on the movie industry is that we likely won't see trailers for movies until we're closer to release or they'll have to put a disclaimer on every trailer prior to release similar to some gametrailers that say something alone the lines of "This is a WIP and the content there in is subject to change or not final".  If they don't then inevitably SOMEONE is going to take advantage of this because of something like their favorite Actor's/Actress' hair was blond in all the trailers and now it's red but they really liked their hair the way it was and they specifically picked up a ticket to see their hair that way.

Alert-- Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 is coming up at 6 am [cst] on Shout Factory TV streaming.  It's the movie that gave us the legendary "Garbage Day!" scene

I recently got the Silent Night, Deadly Night collection blu-ray, though it only has parts 3, 4 and 5... part 3 was absolute trash, though....not even in a "so bad it's hilarious" kind of way.

*Lainey Wilson update = she's up to 550k now on the 'gram.

The whole nepo baby "controversy" is hilarious to me because it reads like a whole lot of sour grapes. As if the folks complaining wouldn't do the exact same thing as the people they're complaining about and take advantage of every connection they had in entertainment. Seems like more stuff designed to try to make people mad when they read articles.

Plus it doesn't mean these fortunate individuals are guaranteed a career as a result. Sure they may get in the door, but that doesn't mean they get to stay there, and I'd venture for every Ben Stiller, there are at least 10 Chet Hanx 😂

Another Holiday, another round of our "Clinical Specialists" refusing to cover it.  I work part time in an ICU as a Pharmacist covering gaps in care but it's not what I do daily.  Not to say I mind covering, but when my work has 4 ICU specialists and they've haven't worked a single major holiday this year it gets pretty ridiculous.  All of the part time people in that section are also now refusing to cover for them.  It's going to be LIT when Christmas morning rolls around and no one is in the ICU.  I can't wait for the Medical Attending to totally lose his shit.

I've kind of avoided reading much about it, but I'm a lot more bothered by the idea of a 3rd generation Congressman than I am by a 3rd generation Hank Williams.

Hank 3 is pretty good, although not as famous as his dad or grandad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It just seems funny that people are waking up to the idea that, duh, of course if you have a parent working in an industry, you're going to have a easier time breaking into that industry. Bet no one complains about nepotism in the barista or gas station attending industries.

I also am covering the ICU Christmas Eve.  Should I let the attending know at the start of his 24 hour shift that no one is covering the morning?  Also, should I wish him Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas?  🤔

Hanukkah. Chances are he's Jewish. Remember, in Jewish tradition, a fetus is not considered viable until after it graduates from medical school.

Not only it’s a useless metric to add, but it’s ugly too.

Helps me as a content creator try to figure out what I can do to increase engagement. If I was just an average Joe ok yeah it doesn't do much except remind me that 99% of what is posted does not matter.

Easiest way to look at this is it's like walk down a street in a city. Many will see you but few if any will engage with you.

It took almost 2 years to get the treasurer position filled. Early 2023 we'll see the series 2021 dollar bills with 2 women's signatures!

What about these? In MK some of the fighters' stance dances are in sync with the stage music. Like Sub-Zero and Raiden for this stage:

Shang Tsung, Cage, Kano, and Sonya with this stage:

See in the beginning:

Same thing with Goro's theme.

I think they loosely based it off of Street Fighter II and their OSTs. Where the characters' are in sync with their stage themes.

Like Sagat:

I heard a new racist name around Union Square, "Caugger". A term being invented for half black and half white people. I actually think it's a catchy name and I am probably going to name my Red Dead 2 Hungarian Halfbreed horse that when i get home since it's a black and white twist coat (very attractiver). May Cigger is a better racist name for white/black people?

How dare she appropriate spoiled suburban white girl culture!  Her daddy better be paying her rent if she wants to sport purple hair like that!

KoolAid colored hair is basically the Maga hat of the left. Anytime someone with that pipes up, I know I'm about to hear some nonsense 😂

I completely agree with what your saying. Some of the words listed here and some of their suggestions is absolutely ridiculous. They don't want people to say walk-in because it's ablest? Gendered words in general treated with scrutiny and hip hop hooray having ties with Nazi Germany? This feels like it came straight out of an episode of South Park

So all the latin descendant languages are slurs now?

This was the villain origin story of the 1st Karen.

That roof was all fucking iced over and shit too. She just went through this whole ordeal of jumping off a train, almost freezing to death in the forest, getting chased by an evil magician, and watching Frosty fucking melt. And they just leave her on the goddamn roof. No wonder Karens hate black people.

whoah hold on... so Tory was found guilty?!?  F&F just went live about this shit

Unfortunately I didn't catch this from the beginning; I look forward to the various others that are sure to have some commentary on this.... didn't they determine that his DNA was not on the gun or gun residue at all? ....and it was looking like she LIED about pretty much everything?!

*ugh... that is painful that they chose to have dumbass condescending bitch piece of shit Hasan on though...that guy is unbearable..

Yeah, Ringo already posted as well

Torey and Kelsey had GSR on them. The DNA on the gun was inconclusive. Their was male and female DNA but whose couldn't be determined. Cross contamination IIRC. Torey's text messages, Kelsey's text messages, and his own witness sealed his fate. From what I've seen a lot of people changed their stories. So, from what the lawyer I watched said, the "heat of the moment" texts carried a lot of weight. The were sent before the parties knew there were going to be charges filed. It didn't helped that Torey allegedly was offering to pay witnesses to have this go away. And the person that seemed to flip the most, Kelsey, had beef with Megan because she was fucking Torey behind her back. The eye witness, called by Torey's legal team, saw Megan and Kelsey fighting while Torey was firing off rounds.
