I started watching the RE show... Everyone except for Wesker are dicks and they're assholes for no fucking reason.  Wesker's kids are lil shit pieces.  Jade being too much of a try hard edgy character with the purpose of seemingly antagonizing everyone around her including Wesker and Billie wasn't really that bad at first until halfway through you realize that she's more than likely the reason why the zombie apocalypse is happening over dumb PETA/Vegan shit.  The moment I saw her staring at those rabbits in the Umbrella facility I went "Ahhh shit....fucking really?"  School principal is pissing me cause there is a pissant girl in school who randomly decided she was going to start shit with Billie when she was just trying to chill and be herself and the school ain't doing shit about it until she allegedly strikes back at her.  So far the only person that isn't annoying me right now in the past  (show takes place in 2 separate times, before the outbreak and after) is Wesker and that's probably only because its Lance.   I now know the full context of that Pornhub quote and that scene with that actually isn't bad as a whole.  It's a moment where Wesker is actually throwing his importance around and threatening the dad of the pissant's job when he said he was going to press charges over her alleged retaliation.   The Pornhub line is just some said to the dad to get the point across of how much he'd get him blacklisted if he wanted him fired but...It's awkward in passing and doesn't really make sense but the good thing is that Lance just delivers the line and the scene doesn't dwell on it or further point it out unlike the infamous Testicle quote from Cowboy Bebop. (god damn..it's nowhere even near as bad as that lol) .   Going back to watching the dumpster fire now.

 

Edit:  I'm very interested to hear AngryJoe's takes on this show after I finish watching it.

I loved that first Silent Hill movie (haven't seen the second, but need to) but the way they used Pyramid Head was the one problem I had with it. Not just that they shoehorned it into the movie but because Pyramid Head is actually the good guy in a sense.

In a lot of the ways it really is the true foundation MK was built on. No other video game adaptation has done what the MK movie did for its source material.

I feel like that's a bit of a stretch. The only things I can remember from that movie that directly influenced the games are Johnny's character, Kano' s accent, and Liu's relationship with Kitana (kinda). Were there things I missed?

MK 1995 benefits a lot from  other recent vg movies being absolute crap- 1993  SMB , 1994 Van Damme SF, Double Dragon etc.  A grilled cheese is infinitely more appealing amongst a sea of poop.

 

MK has the characters mostly looking and acting as they are in the game without weird changes in alignment (Balrog the hero. DJ and Gief are villains!) 

It also has some nice settings courtesy of shooting in Thailand and some good fights for the time (Liu/Reptile and Johnny/Scorp) 

Hell that black dude vs Liu good for a short fight (He should have played Deejay in SF lol)

 

Even though bound by PG-13,  they tried to do some tamer fatalities from the game like Subs ice grenade, Scorps immolation,and the pit knockdown.

 

Unlike the sequel, it was mostly the three heroes and others as cannon fodder/henchman, Raiden the mentor, and Shang. Annihilation had way too many characters.

 

Kano being Aussie made him more interesting.

Liu having a brother killed by Shang is a bit trite but game Liu was still relatively straitlaced so it doesn't bother me.

 

Reptiles cgi is bad but I'd still take that over the crappy makeup effects for Blanka in Van Damme SF.

 

If I was a "real" move critic, I'd probably give it a 6.5 instead of 8/10 as a comic/vg fanboy.

That guy could barely speak English let alone have any charisma or presence.

Being Asian is not enough to defend his casting.

 

Lambert didnt fight and may have been somewhat jokey, but a lot more memorable than Uncle Gambi or  Hogun.

Raiden isn't supposed to be charismatic.  He's a god that plays by the rules and is there to keep things in check.  He's mysterious and quiet.

 

And an asian dude not being able to speak english perfectly is what I would call normal if they aren't born or live in an English speaking country.

oh yeah, back then I was laughing about those race-swaps too... and it was odd to me that no one else I knew personally seemed to care that much...people just had a "eh, whatever" attitude about it--- ya got Raiden being played by the goddamn Highlander dude...and not even dressed up to look like he did in the games back then.  It was forever a Twilight Zone moment for me that no one else I knew was even slightly irked by that.

 

back to that juicy redhead erasure...

Aloy from Horizon...and Moira from Overwatch.  I wonder which black actresses will play those characters if they ever become live-action? Horizon is quite popular so it's possible that becomes a movie or show at some point in the near future, so I'm already looking forward to being amused by that race-swap.  

 

Oh there's also Viewtiful Joe---too bad he's nowhere near as popular as those two games^... but yeah if there was a show out now for that one, they'd probably want Michael B. Jordan to play Joe.

Ok so it wasn't just me.  I was trying to look around to remind myself what his his influences were supposed to be cause I couldn't remember if he was a god that was more talked about in asian lore than not.  Personally I'm fine with Raiden being portrayed with at least some sort of asian descent to him because of that.  Race in MK  especially for a few characters early on didn't always match up with their influences or their story.  Sub--Zero and Scorpion are both Chinese and Japanese and it was only in the recent games and the movie that they actually starts to fix that.

Yeah, but we have evidence, even up to the most recent fg, mk11, where he is not portrayed as asian, even when they swapped the races of other characters to look more like asians, like Sub Zero and Scorpion, who make sense, and Kitana and Milena which was dumb, since they are not from earth, and actulaly being racially ambiguous like in all the 3d games (tanned skin, facial structure that looked kind of eurasian, etc) made sense since they were from another realm.

 

No game has ever portrayed him as Asian, despite his name, which makes sense, he is a God that predates all of that, and he is not even from the earth realm to begin with.

Man...People in this show really have no respect for the T-virus or being just infected in general in the past.   Billie who is infected at this point and as far as they know is mere hours from going full zombie gets invited to a party and Billie is like "I'm not gonna die in this house waiting for the end...I'M GOING TO THE PARTY".  FUCKING...WHAT!?  I really don't fucking like these kids lol.

 

Edit:  and they're at the party and Jade just walks away from Billie and essentially leaves her to her own devices.  and to provide more context to this situation Jade was doing all this research on the T-Virus and find out what was going on with it so she knows exactly what it does and was completely concerned about Billie cause she's clearly showing symptoms.   Now mere hours from shit going south she's just  'In a place with a bunch of people, sister is clearly infected...she's got this! I'll be over here".  What the fuck is happening lol.

Yes, because while his clothes are chinese insipired, he is not portrayed as Asian.

Neither Fujin is represented as fully asian.

 

Like I said, we have evidence, many characters got their feature changed to represent their races, with the exception of Raiden.

Both are gods that take human form when interacting with people on the mortal realms, otherwise they are supposed to be formless and ethereal.

The way I’ve always “seen” gods in various mediums is how Marvel has people and races in their universe see cosmic entities and gods. Cause it honestly makes the most sense.
 

in Marvel gods and cosmic entities aren’t an actual being but a construct built around living energy. so whatever you see them as is the correct way to see them. 
 

So for instance humans see Galactus as a human, Skrulls see him as a Skrull, Kree see him as a Kree, Brood see him as a brood so on and so forth.

This show is probably going to have a ton of rifftrax...I can see that now.   The lickers when they showed up were actually pretty well animated even though they showed up out of fucking nowhere.  They were snatching people left and right Jade's armor in the after apocaylpse story was so fucking strong that she had a fucking stare off with a licker and survived the encounter UNTOUCHED despite everyone around her getting got and yanked into the darkness from several feet away.

 

They even had a Giant Spider encounter which interesting.  Someone had to try to unnecessary Big Damn Heroes themself even though they were safe in the moment which made me kind of face palm.

 

And I had to pause at the moment I'm at right now because they made a Jill "master of unlocking" reference that was very eh...

Yea I've never considered Raiden Asian or anything, he's also a God so he can can make himself look like whatever the fuck he wants. 

 

God's are sexless and raceless generally speaking. Dudes white as rice in MK11, if he was supposed to be Asian of some kind he would be at this point.

Edit: Oh and i think Asian Katana is the best she's ever looked full stop. There being different races of humans on Edenia is perfectly fine with me, I see no reason a race of human with Asian features wouldn't exists on Edenia.

I also do something like this, specially if they throw the line "a form you are comfortable with" in some way or another, or clarify how it works in world.

In the case of MK, they have clearly stated that they can take human form to interact on Mortal Reals, so for me, this could point that they intentionally take a form to represent themselves.

For example Fujin, in lore went to live with humans for thousands of years, so it would make sense that he will take a form that goes with the group of people he lieved with, or at least in part.

 

With Raiden, that has lived keeping a distance (at least more than Fujin), it makes sense that he will take a form that is human like, but not that close to the group of people he interacts with.

Oh the irony is not lost to me at all.  I'm on the 4th episode and everyone is still a dick except Wesker.  Wesker is actually trying get Umbrella to not fuck up with this upcoming drug and Umbrella is like " Your zombie rat that clearly shows what could happen is cool and all but C.R.E.A.M." which is not out of the realm of what Umbrella would do.  But the thing is Wesker is their top pharmaceutical doctor in this universe and he actually legitmately brought up concerns to the board about this new product by bringing a zombied rat to the meeting and the CEO who I can only describe as "having the fattest Wario locked deep inside of her that needs to be let out" convinced the board that it wasn't an issue.  Wesker is pretty much the only semi relatable character in this show right now and even he's done some dumb things...because despite knowing that his daughter is infected he let her go to school.  There's just...some questionable character choices or people just not reacting the way they should to situations based on the information that they have.

God damn the zombies in this show are so painfully selective on how aggressive they are that it's fucking hilarious at times.  There was a scene earlier in the after apocalypse section where Jade was getting chased by roughly 25+ zombies and the lead one manages to catch up and fucking football tackle her ass to the ground.  The camera pans to a shot with her back to he ground and her trying to fend the zombie off...AND YOU CAN SEE THE THE OTHER ZOMBIES LITERRALY STOP IN THE BACKGROUND AND WAITING THEIR TURN.  "Oh we've swarmed plenty of people before but this one?  nah...can't do that" 

 

So I'm in this prison break sequence in the after apocalypse setting and there's this Umbrella employee that's been trying to track down Jade to take her back and they're trying to break out of this prison full of zombies and they're trying to make him look bad ass but one of the zombies clearly has the drop on him from behind and he just puts his hand on shoulder like Miles Morales in Spiderverse..  Full second passes...zombie ain't even trying to bite him and he then fends the zombie off lol.

I literally only watched the first two Highlander films via rentals and tv broadcasts probably a year or two before watching MK in the theaters, so seeing him in MK was a great for me. Just like Phil as Samurai Jack was fantastic when I realize it and thought it was my dude from Mad TV/Pulp Fiction.

That was one of the three things I remember about that movie. The second being Sean Bean living and the third was the way the antagonist went out. Bruh....that was WORSE than Pyramid Head flaying the chick. What happened to her is something Ed Boon wouldn't use as a Fatality in MK. 🙈

My issue is that Asian Kitana doesnt really make sense with how her realm and specially her kingdom has been portrayed, being more like a combination of Middle East, Asian and European inspired than pure Asian.

It is why she was susually portrayed as a tanned female with features that combined a lot of races.

 

Making her purely asian is dumb, when all the other Edenians still are racially ambiguous.

Even more dumb when you see that Sindel doesn't look Asian.

Yea I get that I just don't care because she looks better then she ever has. She finally doesn't look like a plastic as fuck pin up model action figure bunch uggo shit. MK hardly has a great track record with consistency anyway. 

 

She looks like a person. It's a huge improvement.

I think that MKX was the best rendition (even if I don't like her much compared with MKvsDC Kitana).

On MK11 she looks like a discount Chun Li/Chun Li cosplayer, so It doesn't make it for me, plus by correlation ruins Mileena, because it downgrades her from her MKX look, which was the best so far (only being topped by a Mileena with the face of MKX but the body of MK9, lol.)

I think that 9 wasn't really awful, as long as she kept her mask on.

After all, it had a more comic book aesthetic, so it made sense for her to look kinda bulky/with more muscle than an average woman.

 

And (not surprise here), but I never had a problem with the bikini outfits.

For me they went hand in hand with what MK was up until MKX.

 

To me is kind of funny that on a M rated game, we can have violence cranked up to eleven, but sex appeal is a nono now days.

Ive always found MKs marriage of extreme violence and extreme sex very off-putting. It's two things that really don't belong together. Hot women getting lacerated into gibs isn't boner inducing at all, it's boner confusing at best. Moving away from the pretty pointless sexualization one of the smartest aesthetician choices the series has made. It literally clashed with its desire to be hyper violent and got worse as graphics got better.  

 

Being rated M doesn't mean your aesthetics are gelling just because they are both "mature" aesthetics.

And if you apply mods and other improvements that comes with emulating the games, it is a better switch than the switch, with the only caveat that you can't play online.
