I think the only one true consistent negative thing about SF6 is that they keep sticking to their guns about pushing Luke as the new face for the series, or at least this instalment. The overwhelming lukewarm (pun very much intended) or even negative response towards that character ever since they prematurely introduced him in SF5 should have been a clear indication that he's not doing for the fans what they want him to do. It's obviously too late to change anything about the world tour mode and how he's the tutorial guy for the player – and that's absolutely fine either way – but they should backtrack in terms of promotion and either go with the generational thing (by placing him alongside a well-known fan favourite like Ryu or Chun) or have Kimberley, who's gotten a much more positive response, be the +1 on the cover.

It's obviously nitpicking and by the time Super SF6 rolls around the whole marketing will focus on the bigger roster anyway and the days of solo Luke are over, but right now it's that one weird mishap that detracts from a project that otherwise seems to be getting everything right.

Oh yeah, unrelated, but the trailer for Armored Core 6 is one of the best I've seen in quite some time. Not the usual pseudo-philosophical exposition voice over with punctual bass drops mimicking Hollywood's generic approach to marketing, but a strong sense of atmosphere and excellent art direction with a slightly mysterious and otherworldly vibe to it that immediately pulls you in.

I was never interested in the older AC games and might not even play this one but kudos to whoever or whatever studio made that trailer.

Yeah I have no idea why Capcom is so dead set on pushing Luke as the new face of the franchise.

Why don’t they just stick with Ryu is old enough to serve that streotypical mentor role? Why choose your most generic new character to date for this when the rest of your new arrivals are all out of the park? Why does the franchise need a new face at all?

I mean truthfully is there anyone that likes Luke that much?

Because they tried it once with Alex, failed miserably (didn't help that he was low tier in 3S), and are attempting to fix past mistakes with this game, where they have a chance to not only properly tell an overarching narrative, but also actually present their new poster boy to the crowd in an effective manner - he got some plot development in V, he got a major redesign in 6, he's our martial arts teacher in world tour, he's got a major rivalry with another newcomer to the franchise (like what Ryu and Ken were 30 years ago), and just like Alex he's taking the center stage on the cover boxart.

Also not unlike Abel - he's potentially actually tied to the main Villain of the game, though throughout IV Capcom seemingly lost focus and the dude wasn't even there when the main Villain of that game not only was defeated but got squashed by the previous main antagonist of the franchise as a whole. Chances are this time jp doesn't just end up under Bison's and Juri's feet, especially if the former is *dead* dead

I mean I hear you, but this just makes me wonder why they are doing this even more. SF has had a lot of problems over the years but needing a fresh poster boy was never one of them.

Im not mad I just don’t understand why they are so keen on reinventing the wheel.

I like how everybody completely forgot Honda, Sim and Blanka even exist lol. With how much people hate playing  against these online, chances are the closed beta will include Manon / DJ / Marisa and JP before those 3 if Capcom wants to secure more copies sold.

Spoiler

Prolly not but it's going to be hilarious if it happens.

Nobody gives a fuck about these characters outside of them being world warriors. People only like Blanka to annoy other players, Sim is so different from everyone else he is only played by specialists, and nobody outside of old heads likes Honda.

Sim in 6 seems bloated with tools from what i saw. They basically gave him every gimmick he had from past games ( SFV included ).

If he will throw dirt at you and "zone" you 24/7 he better be absolute dog water up close to be honest, like absolute trash. A very big issue in SFV with zoners like Sim, Poison and Menat is that they could pressure you for days since they got pretty abusable repressure tools all while still being able to zone you with ease. Let's hope that mistake won't be happening  in SF6 because it's just really bad design.

With so many normals and specials being insanely minus on block even for characters that usually have +ob normals / specials , i am really curious how are Sim's going to be this time around. If this dude gets safe drills or +ob yoga gale again, they fucked up.

I think it's because Alex never failed as "new protagonist" and people constantly misinterpret what these "new protagonists" of Street Fighter are supposed to be.

At every new game since III Capcom pushes a "new protagonist": Alex, Abel, Rashid and now Luke. They are "new protagonists" because they were chosen as poster boys for the new characters that come with the new game, and they also play a significant role in the story of their origin games. They were never supposed to replace Ryu or anyone in the classic roster, because that's obviously never going to happen. They were never even intended to remain relevant in the sequels, because while they're supposed to play a big role in the story of the game they came from, once that story is done their big role is over with it, and it's time for the next "new protagonist" in the new new game to shine.

I think it's basically just a way to promote the brand new characters in the newer games so that they aren't totally obscure by the classic cast, and to make storylines that are less centered on Ryu and company that kinda don't have much more to say.

Those characters are like that because for 75% (100%?) of SFV’s lifespan zoning was not strong enough on its own to win games. Other than character specific issues like low damage buttons, death by 1000 cuts in SFV is a terrible strategy because you’re just guaranteeing the other guy gets his VT. So unless you want those characters to be dumpster tier the choices are:

A - Give those characters the usual offensive tools or

B - make their zoning oppressive (everyone hates this)

Rant aside, because SF6 is not fundamentally flawed (from what we can tell), zoners having oppressive offense shouldn’t be necessary.

Thing is, the issue is that Sim in SFV has both of those to an extent. This is what needs to be avoided in SF 6 imo.

Obviously too early to jump to conclusions but keep in mind that blocked normals drain drive bar. I suspect you will loose at least a third until you close the gap and reach him. I really think the system is going to be quite in favor of Sim in SF6. He will also have access to a lot of defensive tools like drive break , drive impact and parry, a good buff to a area he is usually weak against, defense.

Guess it remains to be seen.

SFIV Sim was irrelevant because you could focus through his limbs, plus there were a bunch of characters with aerial options like dive kicks that could absolutely wreck him.  If you remove Luke then SFV Sim is basically the best character in the game, since he can both rushdown and zone + escape with Vshift, he's extremely frustrating to fight.

Due to the nature of the character he's usually really good or really bad, but I'm hoping they find a middle ground for him in SF6.  Some of the drive rush pressure with limbs looks scary but he might need that meter for defensive options like parry and drive reversal.  Just hope he's better balanced this time.
