Video Game Discussion Thread: Now Featuring Animated Avatars

heh, I happened to be enjoying Hades while waiting in the drive-thru on lunch today... such is the luxury of portable gaming.

This memory randomly came back to me today... I'm most likely one of the few that still remembers this game... looking this up though I had no idea it was one of the first arcade games to actually have an ending.... oh yeah, time for some old man "Back in MY day" shit

well, this guy has even more great stuff on his channel....he just earned a new fan...here's some more classic shit that only a few of my generation remember...and yes you had to see this game in person to truly get how cool it looked; pictures and video don't do it justice.  It looked like those characters were really there on the stage, about the size of an action figure...like you could actually pick them up off the stage

This was of course quite expensive to produce, I'm sure...so naturally it costed more than other games at the time.  If I recall it was at least 75 cents to $1.00 instead of the 25 cents people were used to.

Good I hated that game lol, amazing that we had that AND Dragon's Lair at our Time out in the lame ass Early Texas Heartland mall.   We actually had a lot of goodies at that arcade tbh, and this is coming from someone that has been to arcades in both south cali, vegas, and florida.

@misterBeegot me wishing we could get an updated remake of SF4 on this new console that includes the sf5 ppl but plays like 4 and gets rid of the pointless nerfs to ppl that I use while giving them more options that they should have had in the first place.  I will forever be salty that they didn't let guy grab ppl that were juggled but put in a shitty cammy clone that could.   Like damn just let breh do the shit he was known for.

This the game in a big black dome with actual real-looking holograms? I remember playing that as a really, really young kid in an arcade with my Grandad! (Can't watch the video, I'm err, working, and will get distracted)

You know which studio doesn't have this drama and releases full games (hopefully this doesn't prove untrue in the future)?

Super Giant Games

Play Hades, you cowards.

Hades is amazing and SGG is aces.

But I love Indivisble and I just read that news and now I wanna chair shot someone. Whiskey isn't helping (or maybe it is?)

yeah that's the one.  So far I don't know of any other games that used this kind of tech to produce the "hologram" effect.  At the time I was thinking this was going to be the new trend of the future for gaming.

ha, imagine they used that kind of tech for porn though---realistic holographic imagery...making it look like the bitch is right there for real? Sheeeittttt....

here's another old one I enjoyed... I had the NES version too... I always thought the final boss (a giant head that scoots around on some device...and his neck had fat rolls for some reason)  was such a bizarre thing in the game

Here's some stuff that might help:

  • Use Streamlabs OBS.  It has hooks that let you view your stream chat and other stuff that normal OBS does not have.
  • Get some nice overlays. Practice doing transitions between different types of screens/scenes.
  • If you're gonna do camera/mic make sure they're of decent quality.  Filter out mic noise and set EQ if possible.

If you're trying to stream to a general audience (and not just your friends), remember to talk or do something to make your stream entertaining.  Nobody is gonna tune in to a stream if it's boring or is just pure gameplay.

Find a niche.  There are millions of people streaming, so try to figure out what makes your stream special.  Either the games you play or your presentation  have to stand out somehow.

I think streaming is super competitive and is a lot of work -- but just remember that more effort = better results.  At the bare minimum having a polished presentation will go a long way.  I don't know how many times I see some random dude with his bargain bin webcam/no overlays/poor sound quality playing the same game everyone else is playing and wondering why he has no viewers.

Good luck!

haha, that reminds me that I happened to know someone who *wanted* to do the whole streaming thing...but the dude just turned out to be too damn lazy apparently to actually follow through with it....strange, because it's not like he had much else to do in life at the time (which makes for a perfect fit for streaming to become your main job)... 😄

Anyway, that channel also covered Superman, btw:

pretty sad that the only cool Superman game I remember is the arcade one.

...strange though; I don't remember the Genesis Superman game at all....and it actually looks halfway decent, imo.

I'm of the firm belief that it IS possible to produce a great Superman game.  The problem is that we've just had the WRONG people making them in the past....y'know...people with little to no creativity or talent.  All you need is the right dev team and there's greatness that is possible with that IP, despite how notoriously overpowered even the basic version of the character is.

I spent some more time with Squadrons last night. Game is fantastic. There is just so much control you have over your systems. You can focus shields to front or back, partition your energy to engine, weapons, or shields; booost and drift, evasive maneuvers, and that's just barely scratching the surface.

You can overcharge each of your systems, so you get extreme boost and agility with overcharged engines, double shields with overcharged shields, and twice the damage with overcharged weapons. But it costs resources from the other systems so you gotta be careful about your situation. The skill ceiling is going to be very high for this game, and I'm fucking loving it!

You can charge you engines to swoop in on an enemy fuck, then switch to weapons on the fly and blast the shit out of that fuck, then switch back to engines and get the hell out of there before one of his fuck friends gets you or whatnot. It's fucking sick!

Uh cool I guess but are the bugs in that game fixed?

Bug issue was overblown to be honest.

And pfffft I you could always run this game @60fps on PC.  🙃

Uppers being ported to PC

I hope US/UK PSN finally gets the Uppers avatars.  I've been using those avatars for my HK and JP PSN accounts, and it annoys me that they are not available in the west.

Overblown eh?

Yeah everyone saw these vids when the game launched.

But I 100% that game and didn't encounter any issues.  iirc they patched the really strange graphical glitches soon after launch anyway.  The glitches are fun for the memes but they were not as big of an issue as the internet would like you to believe.

Unity was a new engine and evolution of the AC formula that tried to do a lot of complex things.  They didn't quite nail it but it would have been interesting to see how this would have evolved if they hadn't moved to the Origins/Odyssey gameplay model.

I da know man...there were a lot of reports from people who played the game from reviewers and not reviewers that remarked how buggy and horrible the performance was.  It was pretty clear that Ubisoft overshot their budget for having NPC's on the screen at one time for a launch title game on the then new machines on top of the other problems the game had.  You might have had a near bug free experience but its pretty clear that a good few didnt.  Is it Bethesda level?  No...nowhere near.  But I can't say the issues people had when the game first came out were overblown.

Maybe it's because I played it on PC.

Glitches are one thing but I can't speak for performance since I didn't play it on console.  Game ran just fine with maxed out graphics on my PC at the time.

The fact the patch to fix unity was almost twice the size of the hame itself should tel you how fucked it was lol

Nah, patch size isn't indicative of quality.  Just depends on how game assets are packed and whether or not you have to replace large archive files at once in order to change content.

Its cool it didnt happen to you, but i happened to tons of people, enough to be a real problem, a big issue.

I havent played the new style ones, but the ones around the Black Flag Era where hella lost in what they wanted to do and be about. That series went off rails a while ago. I hope to pick up Odysee for cheap sometime soon and see if the ship ever got righted. Black Flag ws awesome.

I love all the AC games -- I think they're all good in their own way, even Syndicate, which people seem to hate on for no real reason other than the gameplay style wasn't different enough from what came before it.

Origins and Odyssey don't play anything like older AC games -- pretty much the only thing they have in common with the older games is the story and the title.  They're great games also.

It's funny because people complained all the AC games up to Syndicate didn't innovate enough and played too similarly to one another, but then Origins/Odyssey came out and now people are complaining they aren't AC enough.  There's no pleasing some people.  I try to enjoy each game for what they are.

I always try to enjoy a game for what it is, but deffinitly felt the gameplay was fgetting super stale. Black Flag worked for me because I could ignore the silly Assassins plot and be a pirate instead.

Apparently EA copy pastad FIFA 21 on the switch with no improvements ovee FIFA 20 which in itself was a complete copy pasta of FIFA 19.  So IGN literally copy pasta'd their review for FIFA 20 for FIFA 21

I respect the savagery of that reviewer.

Everyone wants to Bash Bethesda for glitches, but most Elder Scroll glitches that isn't Daggerfall would just result in a broken quest or missing, or duplicated item.
Oblivion, Morrowind or Skyrim don't crash usually unless you are screwing with mods or do something dumb with the command console.
Never had a issue with Fallout 3 or 4. New Vegas is a shit hole of bugs, and the only Fallout Beth didn't make after their acquisition, and Obsidian should stay far far away from Fallout entirely.  MS stepping in would only fuck everything up, so don't bother brining it up.
Fallout 76 is the outlier for bugginess. Oh there was the one bug on the PS3 version of Skyrim but it was quickly patched.

Ubisoft on the other hand has glitches that just ether break the game or are hilarious.
EA made a game that would brick your PlayStation 4.
Both EA and Ubisoft has patches ether the same size or bigger than their games.

I bought Ace Combat 7 a while ago but stopped playing it since I didn't have a flight stick. It was a rare find at the time and sellers were charging almost double for it. It appears that Best Buy has the Thrustmaster HOTAS for PS4 in stock.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/thrustmaster-t-flight-hotas-4-for-playstation-4/6291616.p?skuId=6291616

I just happened to check last week and almost everyone was sold out or third party sellers with a late tax. If considering using this for Squadrons on PC, wait a bit. There is an issue with the stick's dead zone that needs to be patched.

EDIT - SOLD OUT!

They've already patched the dead zone issue for squadrons I think.

I'm a hardcore Ace Combat fan but I've never played any of them with a stick since those games are more arcade-style.  I should probably play through 7 again with a HOTAS.

It certainly makes certain things easier to pull off since they can be mapped to the stick vs buttons (e.g., yaw movement and throttle). It's a more engaging experience.

so much gaming today... I got back into Borderlands 3 and got up to level 20 something.... still playing Zane with the digi-clone and sentinel action skills.

Meanwhile in Kingdoms of Amalur.... the adventures of the mysterious "Zuul" continue on.  Now at level 17 he had ascended to "Sage" status on the path of pure sorcery.

heh, there was one quest where a guy is burdened with this cursed amulet; I agreed to take it and he was relieved....and then I promptly murdered him after that.  He was no longer of any use. 🤣  He's in an area by himself so with there being no witnesses so I got away with it.  I have blacksmithing skill fully leveled up now, so once I find the better components I can craft that godly "mastercrafted" stuff.

Sheeeittt, I've actually been on Live playing games since around 2pm-ish yesterday 😄

More Amalur..

oh yeah, I also have a ring with this character that is one of the best I've ever seen in the game... at least nothing else I remember beats this deal--this thing gives me +1 on Blacksmithing, Sagecraft and Alchemy skills....the 3 most important skills out of the list, imo (at least if you want your character to be a GOD)  On top of that it gives me +50 on Health.  So, I'm really just maxed out on Blacksmithing at the moment because of that ring.  It even grants you a bonus before you've reached certain thresholds to go further in those skills...(e.g.--at very a low level you can't go past 4 or 5 points if I recall... it says something like "you must be level 9.." or something like that.  Rings and items that grant bonuses can get you past those points early)

One tough part I barely scraped through recently--- there's a part where 1 character is trying to retrieve a mystical legendary spear while you fight these creatures that are called "niskaru"... there's several of them, and these are some of the more dangerous things in the game; they are fast and can combo you + inflict a "bleeding" effect.  Whenever it is 2 or more of these things and they are about evenly leveled with ya, it's serious.  I had to fight a couple of them + a "Niskaru Tyrant" which is a "boss" level enemy.  They killed me at least 3 or 4 times on this part.  Even with Reckoning power active, I barely survived this fight when I finally prevailed.  The thing that really helped was that I drank a "damage boost" potion there.... otherwise I was barely damaging the Tyrant, even in Reckoning form.

...and yeah, I'm about to dive back into it.  With 50-something points in Sorcery  have one of the flashier, insane spells now--- "Elemental Rage" (a 3-stage attack; you pull them in with lightning, jump up and blast them with fire, then conjure a large cluster of ice from the sky to fall on your enemies)  I'm at about the halfway mark in the story now.... Zuul had his sights set on joining the "Scholia Arcana" next...
