This is strange to me mostly because this is the first time hearing of an streaming app being just removed off a system.  Netflix still works on the PS3 and we have it in our guest room for people who want to watch stuff.  Then on top of this we're about to move into year 4 of the Switch's life and it only has Hulu and Funimation on it.  Personally indifferent on this since I can stream this stuff on just about...every other device I have in my house but it's just weird.

Yeah it is something that happens, I think cause of Nintendo. Same thing happened with the clunky Netflix app they had on the Wii after a time. Although part of me wonders if they 3DS and Wii U eShop servers are being put down this year, there is talk about them redoing some of their online store and My Nintendo stuff and Nintendo is cheap/frugal so them pulling the plug on the old stuff to support the new makes sense.

this is also a reason why out of all the big 3, I dislike digital-only gaming on Nintendo even more... because I don't have any faith in the longevity of their online storefronts.  It always gets shut down when the next system is out, from what we've seen so far.  Whenever "Switch 2" or whatever it's called is out... then the writing is on the wall for the "Original Switch" side of Nintendo's online store to eventually be removed...and games that were download-only *can't* be redownloaded from that point on....but really I don't like the idea no matter which big company it is.  The ideal scenario will always be some form of physical/removable media, imo...for movies, tv shows and games.  With an actual cart or disc you *actually* have that shit for as long as you take good care of it and whatever system plays it.  Companies can't take it away or permanently change it, when you have that physical copy. (*also why I've ramped up my acquisition of blu-ray/dvds of movies and shows that I truly love...since just about all these companies want to do a full court press towards an all streaming future, unfortunately.)

This is being incredibly over dramatic, imo.

They’re just now removing DSi software from the 3DS eShop and the DSi is over a decade old (2008). They didn’t close the original Wii eShop (2006) until 2019. They don’t just cycle out the old stores once the new console drops. They give people **plenty** of time.

Sony hasn’t fully removed the PS3/PSP/PSVita stores but they’ve also made them a lot harder to access as you can now only access them on the actual systems. I bet you dollars to donuts by the end of next year they’ll discontinue those store fronts.

Xbox is smart with how they do their store and BC but it also costs them a lot more to maintain it cause they’re constantly renewing distribution contracts with devs and publishers. Game pass and XBL definitely helps cushion those costs though. Also being Microsoft helps.

What was violent about Night Trap?

---------------------------------------

I did some looking and finally found my other PS4 controllers, one a Hori pad and another, a Sony Dual Shock. I thought an update screwed up the Dual Shock I was using but it turns out the D-pad just went bad. After changing controllers, it works just fine.

I bought Ketsui off the PS store and after hearing the soundtrack to this game numerous times, it is great to finally hear it alongside gameplay! Man, this game is so good! Of all the M2 Shot Triggers games I've played, Ketsui feels more managable on the arcade setting. Yeah, it is tough but I can evade a lot of bullet patterns. Though I'm sure I should have died many times already. Might be some collision detection issues but I'm not complaining. I'm considering buying the arranged soundtrack that Jake "virt" Kaufman made. I've listened to it before so I know how awesome it is.

Doubt it's collision issues, Cave hit boxes on bullets tend to be much smaller then the visual of the bullet. Couple that with the 2 by 2 pixel hitbox on the ship and you can squeeze through some really silly shit.

Ketsui's ship hit boxes are kinda weird to, much like Dodopachis Helicopter ship it usually sits somewhere in the center of the rotors.

haha I actually bought Night Trap on Switch last year, when it was on a sale... I think it was 3 or 4 bucks at the time, maybe 5?  I still haven't played it though.  The main thing I remember about it was it featured Dana Plato, and the villains were intended to be vampires but they ended up being quite lame and just downright strange in terms of the final design.

edit--ha... the sad thing is that it just occurred to me that the Augers are SO lame... in comparison with the so-called "vampires" in the recent netflix show titled "Vampires" (no powers, no real immortality, no magical healing, etc.)... I'm not so sure which ones are worse.  I'll have to analyze this further, actually.  Yeah, they're that bad.

Good thing I skipped that system it was originally on...there was a short time when I wanted it, but ultimately it ended up having barely anything of note before they dropped the 32x and then the Saturn.  The only things that genuinely interested me for the CD was Eternal Champions CD, Sonic CD, Night Trap and Time Gal.

The Sega CD has some really great shit on it, but yea it was ultimately a bust. Not enough content to really justify it's existance. We did get some.pretty cool niche titles we wouldn't have otherwise, like Snatched and the like.

32x justifies it's existence even worse lmao.

Ohhh I forgot about Snatcher... I haven't even thought of that since way back in the day seeing it previewed in EGM.

I still have a lot of old EGMs... it's always a nice nostalgia trip to look through them on occasion....heh, like right by the tv right now I have the July 1993 issue, which has Jungle Strike and Jurassic Park on the cover... ha, and there's an article about the 3DO since it was a new/upcoming system at the time.

Diablo -- I'm back on with the Switch version now, since my seasonal necro is only up to level 61 there.  I may try to do all challenges on Switch too...

damn but at the same time... now I have Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel as well, which is always tempting. (*+ an old college buddy has it as well, and he's even more of obsessed with Borderlands than I am, so I have a regular partner-in-crime there..)

there's this game i like popful mail but I refuse to play it emulated. I wish there was an option to play it in original hardware without breaking the bank.

everdrives don't seem to work with CD games for some reason that goes for pc engine cd games too.

ha, still checking thru that old issue of EGM (July 1993)... I forgot that there was a "Nosferatu" game for Super Famicom.  I don't recall it ever getting released in North America though....at least I never saw it anywhere...

of course at the time I was disappointed that you don't get to actually be Nosferatu himself though....since this was still in that earlier era of the industry where game devs just automatically assumed we'd always want to play as the hero.

There was also a Robocop vs. Terminator game previewed for SNES.... I never got around to playing that.

My final Christmas present is finally about to get here. My wife got me a Raspberry Pi, and I'm planning on making a retro pi arcade set-up.

It'll be a few weeks at least until it's done, knowing my dumbass, but Imma need some recommendations from y'all about what games I'll put on there.

What do you like to play?

Here's my list of stuff I know I'm gonna put on there if  I can find them:

ST

Third Strike

Heritage for the future

Red Earth

AvP

Outrun

Metal slug

Super Dodge ball

River City Ransom

And that's about as far as I've got. I wouldn't mind putting some shmups on there, but I'd need a "baby's first" one first. I'll probably end up throwing in some SNES games too, but I've honestly played most of the ones that I want to or already have access to them. I also wanna put a bunch of GBA games on there that I either have the nostalgia for or never got around to.

I know you said mostly for nostalgia but if I can recommend a few games for GBA:

Bomber Man Tournament is fantastic. Not even for the multiplayer aspect but it’s story mode is stellar, imo. It’s this weird mix of bomberman/pokemon/Zelda. Which all sounds weird but it fucking works.

it’s one of my favorite gba titles. I bought a GBA SP just to be able to play the hard copy I have.

demikids for gba is great too. It’s like babies first Shin Megami Tensei game. Which makes sense given it’s an SMT spin-off lol.

gunstar superheroes was great too

Looking at the box art reminds me that I'd want the Megaman Zero games on there...

Noted, I should probably put the goldensuns on there too.

i starting to wonder what happened yesterday but leaks are happening.

It seems to have been delayed more of Japan declaring a state of emergency instead of not having the trailer ready or something. Here’s an image of Kyo.

But as always, be aware that it could be fake. It could just be more porn.

If its fake then there are a looooot of fake pictures of characters out there in the same style.  Snk prob should just release the trailer at this point tbh.

I’m mostly making a joke of how the last ‘leak’ of Angel in KOF XV turned out to be porn, but wow. Didn’t realize there was that many pictures out until you mentioned it.

Don't thinkk you understand what you are asking for here...lol

You said Arcade Pi so I assumed arcade games. If you are doing more then arcade stuff then that widens the list considerably, but if you are wanting to stick to Arcade games, specifically Arcade Shmups then you'll have to accept that you're gonna get waxed. There really is "Babies first" when it comes to Arcade Shmups. They all want your money.

The Solider Blade recommendation is a good one, tho I disagree strongly on it being the only one you need, not even close. Might be the best of the Soldier series tho. All the Soldier games are highly recommended, very good series. The Turbo Grafix 16 is a great place to look for quality Shmups. The first two Soldier games are Fanicom games tho, keep that in mind. Honestly the SNES library is a joke for Shmups imo. It has a couple standout titles in its pitiful list of Shmups and even the standout ones are outclassed by shmups on other consoles of the era. I would advise looking at the Genesis/Megadrive list of Shmups, there are a ton of amazing shooters on that console. Stomps all over the SNES in that regard. Some titles to start you off would Battle Mania/Battle Daijinjou, Eliminate Down (this one is tough) Genesis Fantasy Zone is a great little title, Whip Rush is under rated, Elemental Master and Twinkle Star Sprite, as well as Steel Empire, Grind Stormer and TRUXTON.

Both Grind Stormer andTruxton have better arcade releases under the names V-V (that's pronounced V-5) and Tatsujin respectively.

That's a decent starting list. I can recommend a bunch of other stuff to across a large list of hardware.

Given the numbers, I debated posting this in the Switch thread. Switches sales for nearly tripled the PS5's lifetime sales in Japan. It's early but man it's looking like Sony is cooked in Japan.

The numbers is not a surprise. Japan has already favored handhelds over home consoles.
