Dr. Seuss Enterprises Cancels 6 Seuss Books Over Racist Imagery

Six Dr. Seuss books — including And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and If I Ran the Zoo — will stop being published because of racist and insensitive imagery, the business that preserves and protects the author’s legacy said Tuesday.

“These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises told The Associated Press in a statement that coincided with the late author and illustrator’s birthday.

“Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families,” it said.

 

 

In reporting on that decision, CNN gave some examples of the offensive content:

  • Dr. Seuss had a long history of publishing racist and anti-Semitic work, spanning back to the 1920s when he was a student at Dartmouth College. There, Dr. Seuss once drew Black boxers as gorillas, as well as perpetuating Jewish stereotypes as financially stingy, according to a study published in the journal Research on Diversity in Youth Literature.
  • That study, published in 2019, examined 50 books by Dr. Seuss and found 43 out of the 45 characters of color have “characteristics aligning with the definition of Orientalism.” The two “African” characters, the study says, both have anti-Black characteristics.
  • Two specific examples, according to the study, are found in the books The Cat’s Quizzer: Are YOU Smarter Than the Cat in the Hat? and If I Ran the Zoo.
  • “In (The Cat’s Quizzer), the Japanese character is referred to as ‘a Japanese,’ has a bright yellow face, and is standing on what appears to be Mt. Fuji,” the authors wrote.]
  • Regarding If I Ran the Zoo, the study points out another example of Orientalism and White supremacy.
  • “The three (and only three) Asian characters who are not wearing conical hats are carrying a White male on their heads in ‘If I Ran the Zoo.’ The White male is not only on top of, and being carried by, these Asian characters, but he is also holding a gun, illustrating dominance. The text beneath the Asian characters describes them as ‘helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant’ from ‘countries no one can spell.'”
  • The study also argues that since the majority of human characters in Dr. Seuss’ books are White, his works — inadvertently or not — center Whiteness and thus perpetuate White supremacy.

It's cartoon character and they couldn't leave it alone.  The only reason I noticed it is because they changed the design in the sequel. They made an issue where didn't need to be one. And no I've talking about the actual Space Jam design versus Space Jam 2 design.

Yet I'm stressing over it? The amount effort you are putting into this implies this is an issue you are passionate about. Only thing your post was missing is this :tldr:

Yes, I would say I'm more in the middle. I think it's important for me to not be so much involved in the two extremes, yet honoring a little fusion of both and I'm not knocking anyone who is conservative from the subject.  I have my own comfort in balance, as I can't be 100% of anything. It's the same case with my sexuality, which is bisexual. I'm very fluid and would like to remain as is.

That sounds fascinating. I know a female who is gender neutral and bisexual as well. Even her body looks like her identify. She would dress in masculine and feminine clothing. Are you biologically female? I don't even think about my identity. It's like I'm not here, but I am.

Androgyny is gradually becoming more popular. I like the models that have characteristics of both sexes and have the clothing line that's perfect for them. Not something I would like to say, but yes, and it shouldn't matter. I would rather be treated the same as the rest.

Wait until the day comes where either physical media is outlawed or a way is discovered to "update" your physical media to the correct firmware. This would be virtually impossible. You're talking about writing to a medium that can't be written to. You would also need to convert read disc players into writers. Unless we start sending nanomachines through Cat6 and up, your disc based media will be fine.

Honestly I liked Jane as Thor in the comics, I just think she could have been handled better. Fucking great look, a cool mystery on her origin, the whole "Yo I got Cancer but this delays it" thing.

Kinda how I am about the female Ghost Rider. Cool look and design, but she had fucking jack shit for background or use.

Like she looks badass. Marvel had some great designs at that time marred by meh writing and overall narrative focus. Captain Falcon was also a victim of this.

Too complicated indeed...simple way is to begin destroying hardware to deny access to the material or merely jail people for harboring old pre digital media (DVDs tapes etc) and old storage devices. 

 

Look my point was that I am against "book burning" and that offensive or not preserve everything. Add context if we must to explain how some joke or speech was a either a product of its time or that why something was acceptable then to say but no longer. 

 

Just hope the day doesn't ever come and the world goes full minority report.

The very idea of "female-Thor" was dumb from the start, imo.... since y'know... Thor happens to be the specific name of a character.  It's like if you make a new story about Captain America Steve Rogers....who is a woman... *instead* of a movie about Captain America: Stephanie Harris... or a movie where for some silly reason Shuri is now the "Black Panther" (*silly because at least in the MCU, she has been more defined as the tech specialist person; she would likely lose in the physical combat that is required to become a Panther... with the Loony Left running things in entertainment, of course they will probably try this at some point, expecting us to believe she can defeat a dude like M'Baku in a pure 1 v 1 fight by the waterfall. 🤣  I guarantee that the average "girl power!" person out there would question "why is that ridiculous?!"  Yeah ok, whatever, go on and make that foolishness so we can all have a good laugh at the absurdity of it.)

 

Y'know---DBZ... I just remembered they actually re-colored Mr. Popo to blue several years ago, then eventually he was back to the original color.  How long until the same types want to nuke the entire Dragonball franchise?  They won't be satisfied with simply erasing that specific character (which would make more sense, though I still don't agree with erasure of anything in the first place; the "disclaimer" approach is ideal, imo.)... soon enough they will want that entire anime/manga erased from existence.  Go ahead and get your favorite old DBZ episodes saved now rather than later....because that's probably on the horizon as well.  I already have a few on DVDs, from back in the good ol' recent times when no one was that concerned about old shows/movies/games possibly being removed entirely from existence....back when we bought stuff simply because we just really enjoyed it and wanted to own a copy.

I would guess they'll put SSJ4 Vegeta in since they've obviously made his model (you see it in the SSJ4 Gogeta intro) and they're all about re-using assets.

 

But it definitely seems the lifespan is winding down. At least they nerfed UI before they abandoned the game.

At some point there was an altercation and the woman coughed on the driver and tried to take his uber phone. Later the woman said she was doing only Lyft from now on and Lyft said "fuck that" and banned her permanently. Don't know if Uber banned her too.

Wow. I just found out about this on the news this morning. It's definitely not what I was expecting, as I thought they were going to include a section where toys and clothing were going to be exclusively structured for neutrality, instead of looping them together for tolerance. A bit barbaric in enforcing it or they'll be fined, but interesting.

I heard about this... naturally, he's lucky there was dashboard video recording the whole thing, since this is a world where if there's no actual footage, most people would've instantly believed whatever she had to say about the situation, instantly thinking he's a piece of shit.  It's amusing that some people still underestimate just how slanted things are in favor of the "fairer"(and that in itself is a laugh) sex.  Without the footage he would be in a lose-lose scenario on that, no matter what.  Retaliate, in any way and you get shit on by the entire world... don't retaliate and just sit there as she takes your phone or gets violent with you and whatever else she thinks is amusing at the moment.  It probably would've escalated to her damaging his car at the very least, I imagine.  

 

These worthless shits can burn for all I care.  They are basically like spoiled, ultimately sociopathic children that have never been told "no." by Mommy and Daddy at any point in life.
