Video Game Discussion Thread: Now Featuring Animated Avatars

Beat RE8 last night.

That game is good. Gets better as it goes along too.

A little worried about RE9 is going to end up being...

Spoiler

I'm worried it'll be all about rose, which COULD be cool. Or she could end up having goop powers like The Darkness. Which could work maybe? I'm kinda over the Winter's saga of the series, so hopefully they just give Rose a DLC or something.

Hoping that this is the last first person RE game and they mix it up for the next one. They're proved with 4 and 7 that you can change a ton of the game and still make it feel like an RE game.

Survival Horror deck building strategy game next maybe?

So the two games I can literally fly over 95% of the stages in are mechanically deeper then the series that actually demands you learn its level lay outs in order to do them quickly as intended? Mario 3 and World are super fucking fun, but man they are flawed as fuck. All that so called depth and you can just fly over almost every single issue the games ever present to you.

There is actually a lot more mechanical depth programmed into those games, especially SMW.  Shell jumps, midairs, regrabs, POW drops, etc.  And the input to do a lot of those moves consistently requires a pretty high level of skill.  I don't recall many moves like that in Sonic games, but I never had a Genesis so I'm not as familiar with them.

Also, you can't fly over most of the levels in the first world in SMW  (Yoshi's Island), because the cape isn't available to you until Donut Plains. And most ghost houses, castles, underwater, and underground levels (including most of Vanilla Dome) won't let you just fly over them.  Yeah, there are plenty of levels where you can certainly do that, but saying 95 percent of them is just wrong.

And in SMB3 you start to lose altitude as soon as your P Meter runs out, so flight is much more limited because you don't have the cape's ability to parachute hop.  Unless I have a P-Wing, I can't really think of any levels I can completely fly over in SMB3.

But even if I could, why the hell would I want to do that?  I play those games because the level design is awesome and Mario is fun to control, especially going fast.  From the very first SMB game, my favorite thing to do is to stay small Mario and optimize runs through every level as fast as I can (kinda like what you describe how Sonic should be played- and I agree).  Memorizing the design and where enemies are and what kind of jump to do and for how long to hold it-that's what I like about Mario.

And yes, I know and acknowledge that Sonic levels are bigger and badder and accommodate speed as a priority, and that Sonic goes way faster than Mario.  But to me, Mario is mechanically superior when it comes to controlling him. He's just more fun to me.  Especially SMW. He has so much nuanced tech that takes a lot of playtime to master.  Shit that is not even close to being necessary to beat the game and collect 96.

Anyway, that's my perspective on the Mario vs Sonic debate.  I ain't gonna shit on Sonic because those games are fun as fuck.  But Mario is better.

My absolute favorite game to speedrun is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.  If optimizing Mario levels is platforming bliss, mastering Tropical Freeze with Cranky is platforming nirvana.

We shouldn't be surprised, Sega got some old business heads who rose to prominence on arcades, lucked into a success via Genesis/Mega Drive, tanked out of the hardware market and have survived due Japanese/Asian arcades and Sonic.

It is not that they hate money, they just try too hard they miss it when it is flashing them in the face.

Given the inherent design structure of much of the game?

Nope.

The objective is to maximize speed and minimize time, whilst also maxing out one's score, whilst also dealing with enemies, environmental hazards, and bosses that require multiple hits in enclosed arenas.

It isn't bad design at all. It is quite thoughtfully laid out, actually.

But it isn't nonstop pedal to the metal, and nor was it ever intended to be.

So.  You have chosen death.........................BY CATERPILLAR!

Damn.
I didn't find a good picture of it, but that caterpillar.  THAT poor bastard.  It looked like it did NOT want to be there.  like,"Damn man!! What the fuck?  I'm a caterpillar man!! What the hell am I doing here?!?!?  I can see the monkeys and birds and stuff, they got hands and wings and stuff, you could use that shit.  I'm a Goddamn Caterpillar!! I'm all feet and no shoes!! I don't even have a lot of weight or nothing, I can't sit on people, I can't run them down, I ain't got no lasers, I ain't get any bombs, This armor sucks, if you bump into it the damn thing breaks!  I gotta walk through here and hope people ain't paying attention or I'm FUCKED!!!  I don't even know where the fuck I'm going!  I'm a caterpillar!!  I'm supposed to be in the ground!! Man this game sucks!!  Dr. Robotnik, you suck man!!  Get me outta here!! Turn the power off man!!  STOP PLAYING THIS GAME!!  DAMN!"

What the unholy fuck are these goddamned vocals doing shitting up my Guilty Gear?

I could forgive Heavy Day, because it was an intro, Ride the Fire barely got a pass, and normally skipped, and Lily was simple enough to simply delete from my library.

But this?

Blasphemy.

Can't agree enough. I LOVE the instrumentals for the GG and BB OSTs but man, especially the male vocals just yuk it up. Hopefully they'll release instrumental versions. 🤮

Man, Journey is still a great game.  Its still really pretty and the music is nice.  It's very simple and I can see where many people would find the game boring.  I love it though.  That feeling of isolation in a huge world.  I'm surprised that I still get co-op partners.  I kept bailing on them though cause I was trying to get the glyph things on that downhill sliding level.

I'm gonna check out Biomutant and Maneater today.  They both look fun.  I read that Maneater is a mess but I'll still give it a try.

I remember not playing any Sega back in the 8/16 bit Wars because I was 100% Team Nintendo back in the day (up to the N64), and immediately swore off anything Sega, so I missed out on a lot of Genesis stuff. Maybe I'll make amends some day and play the classics thoroughly (mainly Sonic and SOR...maybe Phantasy Star?)

Yea but do you actually ever need to use them or are they just there to be there? Kaizo Mario design has shown how little of an adantage Nintendo takes with Marios design despite all the things you can technically do, level design almost never asks for it.

Well yea Chad i am exaggerating a little bit here for effect. I dont actually mean 95%.

This is true, but you really dont need much space to get your P meter filled, so you can still fly over massive chunks of Mario 3s levels, and they looked at that went "Lets let them fly indefinitely!!" Getting P Baloons isnt too tough either if you know what you are doing.

I dunno, and yet people do it a lot. People find the broken and easily abused mechanic and ride it all the way to victory. You choosing not to doesnt mean thats how everyone else does it. Choosing not to abuse the mechanics doesnt mean the abuse of those mechanics has gone away. They are still there, youre just ignoring them for personal reasons and the debate was aboutt he Merit of these two franchises when compared to one another, especially after one said one fanbase ignores one series flaws to prop it up while ignoring the other franchises flaws that they are promoting. Thats really why this convo got to this point. The accusation one group ignores the flaws in the thing they like while the other doesnt when thats not true at all, both of you have literally argued "Well if i ignore that franchises flaws..." and im not gonna do that when comparing the two. On a personal level yea I can ignore the Cape or Tail if i want to and have a good time, but when objectivly comparing it to another franchise i refuse to ignore flaws in one or the other to prop up one or the other.  The Tail and the Cape as implemented are mostly a flaw and bring down Mario 3 and Worlds quality due to a lack of balance. imo.

So the question begs why is any of it there? Its never needed, most players will never even scratch half of what Mario can do in World because they are literally fluff mechanics. They dont really enrich or uplift the experience, they are just there if you want to fool with them. Like yea you can say Mario is mechanically richer but how? How do those mechanics uplift the experience? Sometimes i really wonder if some of this stuff is actually mechanics or if its just a happy accident of systems bumping into each other in interesting ways (which isnt a bad thing.) There seems to be a real lack of intention with a lot of these deeper Mario World mechanics because they arent actually utilized in the design of the game much at all. Like pretty rarely. Kaizo Designers have done a much better job pushing Marios mechanics in meaningful ways then Ninentendo has imo. Like I loved Odyssee and everything Mario can do is fucking awesome, but it also struck me many times like guys at Nintendo didnt know what to do with some of his stuff so they just shoved Moons everywhere and up everythings ass and hoped it would create situations that would take advantage of the toolset they created.

Im more then happy to have the convo but you havent really explained how Mario is better lol. You just made some vague comments about depth and thats kind of it lol. I would say Mario is better over all because the quality of the titles is really consistant across the series while Sonic is ALL over the fucking place when it comes to quality. For me the best Sonic games like Sonic 2 are better then the best Mario games like World. They have legitamte focus and design goals, incredible level design and pacing, and they give you what benefits the game instead of just a huge tool box they hope has depth and fun. No useless trashy fluff like the Kuribo Shoe in good 2D Sonic games and no over powered tools like the Cape that just snap the majority of the experience in half.

Also depends on what we are talking about too because 3D Mario>>>>>>>>3D Sonic easily but 2D out of both is a closer race.

No thanks, lol. I don't think it's necessary to get into it and I honestly don't have the time,  and really don't give a fuck either way anymore.  I've said all I care to on it- Mario is my favorite franchise and that's about all there is to it.

Using your arsenal of combos and special abilities, you and your co-op teammates should make life miserable for those super-powered criminals, fend yourself from the fury of werewolves, resist the hexes of street wizards and confront the megacorp led by vampire houses that enforce their goons to do their dirty deeds.

The Mayhem Universe

Comic book-inspired hand-drawn backgrounds and frame-by-frame animations coupled with a kick-ass soundtrack will deliver a jolt of adrenaline to your controller. With the choices you make, you will shape the flow of the story and finally reach one of the three different endings in Mayhem Brawler universe, where each corner has a story to tell.

I started Biomutant a little while ago... started with a focus on Intelligence and Agility...almost an even split there....and playing a mercenary.  I may want to end up with the dual-wield or single blade melee + Psi powers as my regular thing.  I took the puke ability as my first biogenetic upgrade.....there's another power called Mucus Bubble...yeahhhh I'm more than likely going for that.  I also tried to make my character look dirty and stank, like another shit-themed character, of course.

200% if you count the MSRP.

If I had a nickel for everytime a game journalist talks about butt plugs in an article about games, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t much but it’s weird it happened twice.

More of them would be...
